John Smith: foreign?
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Dear Fellow Rootschatters,

I have been going through the Bishops transcripts for the parishes around Bangor-is-y-coed and have a problem: In the marriage records it seems to use the word 'foreign':

"John Smith of Althre: fforeign and Margaret Edwards of Bangor now married by licence August 14 1701'

The word 'foreign' is used in three cases on the same page but I don't understand its meaning.  Is anyone able to help?

He wasn't Welsh - he was a "foreigner" so was probably English

Its not referring to a foreigner!Look at what it says here about the neighbouring Parish of Overton.

Dear Carole and William,
Thank you for your replies to my question.  William you've hit the nail on the head.  When I look at the records all three say Overton Foreign.  My chap had Over Foreign and the writing is such that I took it to be Althre because that is where he was living for much of his life but now I see it is just Overton, shortened by the priest to fit on the line.

Thank you

Kirk
