Baptism Register Protocol c. 1965 - England, CofE
« on: Thursday 12 March 15 14:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi there. Just a quick query on an Anglican Baptism from the English Midlands in the mid-1960s.

Doing some research and came across a baptism entry for a relative with the father's name left blank.  I already know what this means, however I noticed that the mother gave an address on the day which I know for a fact she wasn't living at.

The mother already had family ties to the parish in question so if she needed a local tie purely for baptism admin sake she could have easily used a relatives. There is no known link between the address on the baptism register, the people living there (as evidenced by historic electoral regs) and the woman I'm researching.

The people living at the address given were a married couple with a teenage son. The only male of realistic child-fathering age is the man of the family. Historic electoral regs give no other people living there during the whole decade.

The woman who was having her child baptised was in her mid 20s.

My question is - has anyone ever come across a case where the father's name is left blank on a baptism record (due perhaps to him being married to someone else) but his address is the one given as the abode in the register, although the mother in fact lived somewhere else?

Cheers and thanks for reading.

Maybe there was no hidden meaning behind it ie she just gave a random address in the area  :-\

What address is on the birth certificate (if you have it)  Maybe she did temporarily lodge at that address to birth the baby, don't suppose the married woman was a nurse?

Thanks for responses.

Birth cert in hand. Birth took place 2 months prior to baptism and 40 miles away.

Mother of baby known to be at completely different address elsewhere in same general district for a year prior to birth and about the same after.

Mother of baby not known to have ever worked in domestic service. Knew her personally and she would have got fired on first day haha

It was still common for unmarried mothers to be sent away to have the child and live in lodgings for a few months, after which the child surfaced as a recently orphaned cousin.

You need to take care what you say as the Forum has a policy of not allowing anything that may refer to someone who may be alive.

The lady in question passed away several years ago.

Yes, baby born in known mother and baby home. After birth, mother returned to home city with the baby. She had grown up in parish where baptism took place but had absolutely no connection to the address she gave on baptism register or the people there. She was living outwith parish at the time and had supportive family there.

Baby categorically claimed as the mothers from day one with true identity not hidden at any stage.
