Hebrew Writing on Gravestone can someone please translate.
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 01:07 GMT (UK) »
I hope this is the correct thread for this query and that I can attach the photo properly.
Gravestone for Hyman NAPHTALI  in the  Old Napier Cemetery.... NZ.
Have tried to work this out using another websites guide but am completely flummoxed.
Think some of it means "Here lies".... "Son of"...."Years"... and, if I have matched it properly, it says that the bottom line comes from the 1st book Samuel 25:29..."May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life"
The top of the stone is a bit weathered but still legible.  Your help and/or where to try next much appreciated.
Cheers

I can transliterate most of the letters, but I'm afraid I can't work out the meaning except that the end of the first long line looks like "son of Solomon (Shlomo)".

There are some similarities with the stone shown at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=703804.msg5467665#msg5467665 from which it appears that you have the last line right.

It might be worth putting a message on the same board as that one (Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition) alerting people to this one - you may well get similar help. Or maybe a PM to the expert(s) who helped there?

His Hebrew name (in the first full line) is Tsvi Chaim ben Shlomo = Tsvi Chaim, son of Solomon (as Arthur has said).

Strangely, I think his age in the next line reads '38 years'. But you will need someone else to confirm or refute that, and to complete the line.

Hello Arthur & Bookbox,
Thank you for your help and the address for the other thread, have sent a PM to Justin to ask for his help, and look forward to his reply as well.

Hi Heather,

Unfortunately the inscription is very brief, so there are no clues to explain your mystery. Bookbox is spot-on with his/her reading of the Hebrew name.

The line above that is a two-letter abbreviation for po nikbar or po nitman meaning 'here lies'. I can't quite make out the first few letters on the line below his name, but the remainder refers to year of death.

Tsvi means 'deer' in Hebrew, and when Jacob blessed his sons (Genesis 49), he described Naftali as a deer that had been set free. Baby boys named Naftali would invariably be given the second additional Hebrew name Tsvi. It's interesting that Hyman used his own given name as a surname.

I take Marcus Poswillo's grave was unmarked. How about your great-grandfather's?

Justin

Hello Justin,
Thank you for looking and your help.   Yes, Marcus is in the Paupers section somewhere, no stone, and the cemetery records were lost in the 1931 HB Earthquake... Leon Poswillo  (GGdad) is buried in Gisborne NZ and neither his nor his wife's grave has a stone.  But every little bit of information helps and maybe some time in the future it will all fall into place!   Wouldn't that be wonderful.
