Suggestions to help find an Elizabeth Murray in Scotland?
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for any help or suggestions to find an Elizabeth Murray when I have few facts to search with - what I know is:

Age 36 in 1911 (therefore born circa 1875)
Father: Thomas Murray (profession in 1902: clerk)

I think she was born / lived in Glasgow but not 100% certain about this. I've searched the Scottish census and birth records but as expected, there are a lot of records for Murrays. Would appreciate if anyone has suggestions on what I could do next in my search. Perhaps it's futile and I simply don't have enough info to find out more but I'd love to try!

Hi Isobelsi

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Are we working from a 1902 marriage for Elizabeth? Who did she marry?

Thanks Monica. I did get the information about her father from her marriage cert however the problem I have is that she married an Irishman in Ireland, no help therefore in my Scottish search.

That always makes things a little harder for sure. Who did she marry? Guess the ref for 1911 will be in Ireland?

Sometimes the use of names can help particularly with Scottish/Irish ancestry. See here for example www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm  Not always followed or in order but amazing how often it was in a close format. The Scots also liked the use of surnames as middle names which often gives clues on ancestry.

Yes, the ref is from the Irish 1911 census. I can't find her on the 1901 census in Ireland yet she got married in Dublin in 1902, to a John (aka Thomas) O'Neill.

The naming patterns might help, I'll go back to a list of their children's names to check. Thanks for the link and info.

Maybe post the 1911 census ref entry you have and people can work through with you from that entry?

Children in order of birth from 1911 census are:
Mary A
Elizabeth
James
Denis
Joseph (though he was christened John Joseph)
...and there is another daughter after this by the name of Alice.

So I guess if it follows the usual naming pattern, it could be that Elizabeth's mother's name is Mary and Mary's father is Denis with Denis' mother being Alice.
And maybe Elizabeth's father Thomas' mother is Elizabeth and his father is James with James' father being Joseph or John.

I wish there was even one unusual name in the bunch!

Is this the family entry in 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/North_City/Beatty_s_Court_Rere__161_2_Denmark_Street__Little_/16166/

Thomas (aka John?) O'Neil and wife Elizabeth show as married 18 years? Doesn't fit with a 1902 marriage. Also her birth place is showing as Dublin.

Could this be a second marriage? Even though other things don't fit with what you mentioned with this entry from 1911.

Why do you think that Elizabeth could have been born in Scotland?
