Sloane Street Moss Side Manchester
« on: Monday 16 March 15 15:31 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am having terrible trouble trying to research my family. My great grandparents on my fathers side emigrated from Southern Ireland in 1923. I know that they settled in Manchester and their address according to my grandfathers marriage certificate in 1943 was 80 Sloane Street, Moss Side.

My great grandparents names were Michael and Mary Wilson.

When researching the address i struggle to find information. Can anyone point me in the right direction to how i might find the information?

Welcome to RootsChat :)

It looks like I've found it for you:
http://www.mancky.co.uk/?p=8833

Half way down that page it has an overlay of the OS map of 1893 over a Google Map, showing the position of Sloane Street, Moss Side.

From that, it looks to me like it's now Sedgeborough Road, up from where it crosses Catesby Rd and Westerling Way: https://goo.gl/maps/JIH77

Thank you Tristan.

Such a shame that i am unable to find the house where my family once lived. The houses all look relatively new.

Hi! catrobinson,
My good lady was actually born in Hulton Street,  and she tells me that Sloane Street ran from Greame Street,  up to and across Great Western Street,  then up to Raby Street where it finished.
Unfortunatly she has no recollection of your family,  but of course she was but a little girl at that time.
Also on the corner of Sloane Street and Great Western Street was a public house called the Little Western (locally known to all as Charlie Moores,  who was an ex footballer I understand). The well known bus route No. 53 used to run up Raby Streeet towards Princesss Road and on to Belle Vue etc.
The return journey,  going to Trafford Park ran down Great Western Street and on to Brooks Bar and then to Stretford Road etc.
Your main point of reference must begin at Brooks Bar,  going along Withington Road,  past the Whalley Hotel on your right hand side.  There will be streets going off to your left and they will at least locate you in the vicinity of the original Sloane Street.  Perhaps the recently refurbished Central Library would be able to help you further.  I wiish you all the best in your search.

Thank you Sarah.

This side of my family has proven nearly impossible to research. My great grandparents emigrated from southern ireland in the height of the civil war. There is confusion over my grandfathers actual name as he assumed an alias when he came over here (very secret squirrel!) I have tried pretty much everything. I have obtained copies of marriage certificates and war record for my grandfather showing different names. I am unable to obtain a birth certificate due to the conflicting information i have and the fact a lot of the records were destroyed.
By tracing the family back to 80 sloane street, i can at least start naming people. Any leads are better than non  :D

My father and uncles have very little recollection of their grandparents even though they only lived in Hulme when growing up. For some reason they never spoke about their past and how they came to be in england.

There is a memory that my grandmother Mary Wilson (nee Looby) was very good with money and was able to purchase a guest house. Whether this is the house on Sloane Street i do not know.

My grandfather Michael Wilson (or Stephen as his alias) was a very secretive man but i know he was working in a munitions factory during the war.

That is pretty much all we have!

I have here a list of links to images of Sloane Street area from the late 1960s and very early 70s that may help in particular the two that are noted.

I used to live at 56.

One of Andy Staszko's photos from the 60s/70s matches a photo I have with my grandfather in it from around 1910, at 88 Sloane St, at Sloane and Western. This doesn't help you find your family, but I thought it might be interesting to the group. Hopefully, if I don't mess this up, I'll attach my photo and Andy Staszko's, as well.
