Lucy DONOVAN who migrated to NZ in the 1860s
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 03:51 GMT (UK) »
Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Can anyone help me in finding the descendants of Lucy DONOVAN who migrated to NZ from Ireland in the early-mid 1860s, according to oral family history.
I believe her parents were Mary nee BOYLAN and Peter DONOVAN, from Co. Meath; her father died at a relatively young age.   She had a brother, (George) Peter DONOVAN (1844/1845-1931) who came to NSW about that time, but the circumstances of his arrival are uncertain.   He went to the Solferino (Clarence River region) gold fields & eventually settled in the Lismore District as a farmer. :)

Hi Anchor425, and welcome. :D :D

Can you tell us anything else about Lucy DONOVAN to help us eliminate others and ensure we have the right person?

When she was born, what port she might have arrived at, where she might have lived, do you know if she married, do you know when or where she died, etc?

Hi Anchor452 ,

I can't see a marriage or a death that fits your Lucy.

Cheers Janette

Hello Spades & Janette
Your interest & info is appreciated.
I regret that I know very little other than what I have told you already.   My info was obtained during a one & only visit in Feb 1979 to Roger Bede DONOVAN (1907-1980) in Lismore NSW.  Roger was a son of George Peter DONOVAN and said his father was born about 1843 in Co. Meath and emigrated with his sister, Lucy who went to NZ; he also said their father had married & died young.
I don't know Lucy's years of birth & death, or if she married in NZ.
Kind regards
KF

Hi again,

No worries, even that helps.

Do you know if her brother (George) Peter DONOVAN (c'1844-1931) also came to New Zealand (just thinking that it might be more likely that they travelled together)?

If there is no obvious New Zealand marriage of death record Lucy might also have died in Australia.

I can see a Lucy E DONOVAN on NSW BDM who died at Sydney in 1867, daughter of William and Elizabeth.

In 1888 a Lucy DONOVAN married Ferdinand H R JORGER in the district of Orange.

I don't know whether or not George Peter DONOVAN (GPD) went to NZ first.   As I said, the circumstances of his arrival in the Australian colonies is not known; he doesn't appear on NSW Records online, in this respect.   He might have been one of the crew of a ship & absconded, or he may have arrived in what is now Fremantle, WA as a convict, then moved east; I think the latter is is unlikely but there was a George DONOVAN convicted Middlesex, Clerkenwell Sessions transported to the Swan River Colony; about a third of the convicts left that colony after serving their time; IAW his age at trial he was born ca 1839, hence several years older than my GPD.

I doubt that Lucy Donovan would have moved from NZ to Australia, as I expect her relatives would have known & passed it on.   The Lucy who died in Sydney had the wrong parents; I know from GPD's church record of marriage that their parents were Peter DONOVAN & Mary BOYLAN.   The marriage in Orange, NSW in 1888 may be a little late for a woman possibly born around the 1840s (GPD was born ca 1844/1845) & that Lucy may have been the one on the index born in Orange in 1870, hence marrying at an appropriate age of 18 yrs.   There is no death of a Lucy JORGER on the NSW BDM index (which might have provided names of her parents).

Have you tried variations of "Lucy", such  as "Lucinda" & "Lucynda" in case NZ indexes are as sensitive as the NSW BDM?   GPD married a Lucy who was christened Lucinda!

Your interest is much appreciated.   Kind regards

KF

Hi KF

There are no Lucy or variations in NZ BDM's marriages and only one death for a Lucy or variation and it doesn't look like your Lucy

1912/3123   Donovan    Lucy    38Y

Here is the link to NZ BDM's if you would like to have a look
