Military buttons
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 14:11 GMT (UK) »
I am sure someone can identify these buttons from the family collection - I sure they are all fairly ordinary, but I don't seem to get far looking on the internet. I assume the front 2 are standard issue WW1 tunic buttons. The 2 anchor buttons at the top have slightly different laurel wreaths and different makers. I will give details if necessary.

Good evening,

The 5 with anchors on them are all Navy buttons. The one centre left is RAF and the bottom 2 are the general service tunic buttons as used by the army.

Added, the navy buttons with a wreath are officers buttons, the ones with rope edging are ratings buttons.

Hi, I agree with John915, R.A.F, Navy and general service buttons.

Regards
Frank.

Added: I may be wrong but the Navy Officer buttons may carry the Victoria crown.

What age would the navy buttons be? The only member of the family I know of in the R.N. served from 1854 to 1874, and the top left one appears to some sort of plastic.

I agree that the crowns on the brass naval buttons are Victorian. The black one has a King's crown and is possibly WW2 era.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't expect the naval buttons to be Victorian, so I am now a bit puzzled. Great grandad became Admiral's Cox'n (C.P.O.?) but I don't imagine that entitled him to officer buttons.

Good evening,

Chief petty officers were warrant officer rank so wore officers style badges and buttons.
