Trying to find Anne Mattingly
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 21:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi, i have an Anne Mattingly born Stanford in the Vale Berkshire 1847 daughter of Joseph Mattingly and Jane Tombs who married an Albert John Smith in 1866. In 1871 they were at The Bricklayers Arms in Longcot Berkshire then in 12881 they had moved to Swindon Wiltshire. After that she disappears, I have her husband Albert living in Sweindon in 1891 as a Boarder and down as Single. Her 2 oldest children are out and working and living seperatly and her youngest is living with his grandparents.
I cant find a death for her and as Albert is down as Single in 1891 did she remarry?
Any help is appreciated.
Martin

Yes interesting that. Her parents only lived two streets away so I think she must have visited them on the census night and got caught by their censur as well. Lol

Hi Martin,
I have one of the Mattinglys of Stanford in the Vale on my extended family tree, William Mattingly born abt 1839. I know nothing about his family since he is only a distantly connected by marriage.
Mattingly is not a common name, so I assume he was somehow related to your Anne. William died young (1865), leaving a wife and 2 sons. His widow remarried to one of my gg uncles and emigrated to Australia. It's just a thought, but perhaps Anne also went to Australia since she may had relatives there and a place to stay.
If you want to do any searching in Australia, I can give you details of where my gg uncle and family lived.

hth,
Carmela

Hi Carmela. Thanks for your reply. It is na possibility but I thinkn the most blikely nis she remarried butn I of course have no way of pinning her down lol. Anne married the brother of my GG grandmother who was born in Longcot then Berkshire but now Oxfordshire. Albert was running his dads pub in Longcot The Bricklayers Arms after his dad died and Ann according to the census was the daughter of a Victular Joseph and Jane Mattingly at The Horse and Jockey nin Stanford In The Vale. Alberts mum owned the Bricklayers and remarried and moved to Brize Norton and sold the pub. I assume this was when Albert and Anne moved to Swindon Wiltshire.

Hi

I wonder if she ended up in Gloucester ?

In the 1891 census Anne's brother Joseph Mattingly is living in Gloucester, St John the Baptist Parish.
By the 1901 census Albert J Smith is there too (bn 1842 Longest Berkshire ~ as transcribed by Anc* ~  in the same Parish as Joseph had been.

Yeah I have got Albert in 1901 and his death back in Swindon in 1910. Didn't realise Annes brother was in Gloucester as well.
Also by n1901 Joseph was a widow and living with his brother in Swindon near where Albert and Anne used to live.

I have an Ann Mattingley and don't know where she was born but baptised 17/7/1814 Hurst which is not all that far away but of course the time frame doesn't fit but it might help in  your search.
