Sedgwick Children Baptised at Wall, St John the Baptist - Lichfield
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 00:07 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone planning to go into the Staffordshire Record Office who could look for some baptisms in the following Parish Records?

Wall, St John the Baptist (Formed 1843 from pt. of Lichfield St Michael EP)
Baptisms - 1843-1920
Marriages - 1846-2003
Burials - 1844-1933

I'm hoping to find the baptisms of children born to William and Martha Sedgwick from 1843 to 1850.  I have the birth of one child (Emily - 26 Oct 1845 from page 3 of the Baptism Record). I don't know if they had other children but considering they married in 1839, I wondered if there were more born and baptised in Wall before Martha remarries in 1850.

Assuming I've looked at the correct 1850 marriage - Joseph Blower and Martha Sedgwick, and that I've got the correct family in 1851  -
HO107/2014 folio 462, page 26 - Harehurst in the parish of St Michael, Lichfield
Joseph Blower - 39 - Ag Lab
Martha - 34
William - 10 - Plow boy
Mary - 8
Sarah - 5
Mary Ann - 7
Emma - 6

I can see that William, Mary and Sarah are registered as Blower in StaffordshireBMD.  However, I cannot find any registration under Sedgwick or Blower for Mary Ann and Emma, nor can I readily see any entry in the 1851 census for Emily, born 1845.

I may get the chance to get to Lichfield Archives next week, so I'll check out the Wall baptisms.

Hi BumbleB:

Thank you so much for taking the time to look  :)

Yes you have the correct 1850 Blower/Sedgwick marriage and the correct family in 1851.

It is that Mary Ann - age 7 - that I'm trying to find the baptism for. I've been thinking that Mary Ann and Emma are children from Martha's first marriage to William Sedgwick.

Emily was baptised in Wall in 1845. So I'm wondering if Mary Ann was also baptised there in 1843 or 1844.

Hope you are able to have a look in the Lichfield Archives - my fingers are crossed  ;)

Thank you again.

No problem - I only need an excuse to go to Lichfield - I have no connections with Staffordshire, but love going to the Archives AND it costs me nothing other than time  :o ;D ;D

No rush  :)

I've been looking for the birth/baptism of my gr gran (Mary Ann) for quite a few years now. William and Martha Sedgwick are the best links to how my Mary Ann came by the surname Blower.

St John the Baptist, Wall (from 1843)

Sarah Blower - Joseph and Mary of Harehurst Cottages, Labourer - 25 May 1845
Emily Sedgwick - William and Martha of Wall, Letter Carrier - 26 October 1845
James Blower - Joseph and Mary of Harehurst Cottages - 1 November 1846
Eliza Blower - Joseph and Martha of Harehurst Cottages - 24 August 1851
Thomas Stevenson Blower - Joseph and Martha of Harehurst Cottages, Labourer - 20 March 1853
Henrietta Blower - Joseph and Martha of Harehurst Cottages, Labourer - 2 September 1855
Mary Blower - Sarah (Spinster) of Wall - 19 April 1863

St Michael, Lichfield (from 1839)

Anne Blower - Joseph and Mary - 21 July 1839

I also checked the register for Hammerwich - nothing

Do you have William and Martha's marriage certificate - as it was a civil marriage, I couldn't look at it - just wondering, as William is said to be a "letter carrier" that the children were baptised somewhere else?  :-\

Thank you very much for going to look at those Wall baptisms  :)

Yes, I have William and Martha's marriage cert. When they marry in Lichfield in 1839 William and his father James are both shown as - Shoemaker. William is recommended as a letter carrier at the Liverpool post office in 1840 and in 1841 census William and Martha are in Liverpool and his occupation is Postman.

You are probably right - any other children may have been baptised elsewhere. I've been trying to search in Staffordshire first before trying Lancashire. I've haven't been able to find William's death either and have been gradually eliminating the various William Sedgwick registrations both in Lancashire and Staffordshire.

I don't really know if that 7 year old Mary Ann on the 1851 census is my Gt Gran but she's my best hope right now.

Thank you again - hope you enjoyed your day in Lichfield  :)

Sorry, I couldn't help further  :'(  And, yes, I always enjoy my day at Lichfield - I can't do my lot, from Yorkshire, but I can do Lichfield Archives for others.  It's a lovely venue (for as long as it lasts   >:( >:( >:( ) and costs me nothing
