Thomas Clarke 1890
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 12:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am hopeful that some of you good people may be able to help me with finding out about my maternal grandfather Thomas Clarke.
My grandfather was born Jan/Feb 1890, I have no idea where, however, thought to be England. (he spoke with what I took to be an English accent) I was 26 when my grandfather died in 1979, sadly I never asked him about his past.
My grandfather (living and working in Greenock, Renfrewshire) married his, Greenock born, wife in Glasgow 1918.
On their marriage certificate my grandfather has noted his parents as William Clarke (Milk Salesman) and his mother as Elizabeth Beaumont, both deceased.
The only marriage I can find in 1890 is for a William Clarke and an Elizabeth Beum in Barrow upon Soar Leistershire.
I have searched for births of Thomas Clarke 1890 to both the above people with no luck.
It would be great if I could begin, with your help, to find out more information about my grandfather.

There is a record for a Thomas Clarke born 18/2/1891 residence 4/2/1904 Leeds says he is illegitimate ..Mother Elizabeth Beaumont alias Clark ..This Thomas was placed in a home ( Shadwell Children's home ) until he was 16years ..The mother had been known to have 5  children to different men and was in the habit of being out begging leaving the children unprovided for

Also his brother William Beaumont alias Clarke born 26/6/1894

Thank you Rosie17.

The Leeds connection is interesting as my mother (now aged 87), thought her dad was from Leeds??. He was a very quiet man, who it seemed never told his children of his origins, he never mentioned siblings.
If this is my Thomas, I would imagine he did not want to talk about his background.

I assume, from my grandfathers marriage certificate, that his mothers maiden name was Beaumont although you mention alias Clark(e).
Can you clarify this for me please.
kind regards
Tommy

There is one report in the paper, quite a bit earlier

Leicester Chronicle 14 October 1876
CHILD DESERTION
Elizabeth Beaumont was charged with deserting her two children, whereby they became chargeable to the fund of the Leicester Union.-Defendant pleaded  guilty, and was sentenced to 14 days' hard labour.
