Chain of Office insignia

Hi. The attached photos show my Grandfather, Edwin "Ted" Palmer, of Cardiff, wearing a chain of office. I am trying to identify the organisation from the insignia.

Ted (b1889) was a grocer with a successful business from about 1933 until the 1970s. He was a member of the Order of the Moose, but I've got photos and the insignia there is quite different.

He was never Lord Mayor nor, I believe, a Councillor.

I have tried to make something out in the enlarged photo (the best I can get without losing resolution). I might be quite wrong, but I think I can see two figures in the enlarged photo - one on the left looks like a woman in a white dress, with her arm around the one on the right, smaller and dressed in dark clothes. Or maybe my imagination is running ahead of my eyesight!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Good evening,

I have checked the Cardiff chamber of commerce but he is not listed as a member. It could be something similar, the chain looks like it would be worn by the leader of something along those lines. Given that you say he was not the mayor at any time.

Thanks John. Sorry I missed your reply earlier. Am still no further forward on identifying the chain I'm afraid, though I am now working in the direction of the "National Federation of Grocers' Associations"!

Could it be something to do with the game of Rugby?

Or a Town Council?

Thanks ScouseBoy, but I don't think so. He wasn't into rugby as far as I know, and I've checked that he was never a Councillor. He was a member of the Order of the Moose, but their insignia is very different.

I think it relates to his trade as a grocer. In 1934 he was President of the Cardiff Grocers' Association, and I have a photo of him with the chain of that office (quite different from this one), and I believe that later he was an official - possibly President - of the National Federation of Grocers' Associations. But records of that organisation, let alone photos, are proving difficult to track down!

It doesn't look like the coat of arms of a civic authority anyway.

Usually those chains are very valuable because of their weight in gold.

Could it be Chamber of Commerce or something similar?

Where did he live, do you know?

My interpretation of the badge is that it is someone playing Rugby or Athletics.  Lets see what others think.

Records for national federation of grocers and provisions suppliers associations have not been digitised. They are held at Kew so a visit would-be required.

Yes, as I said I'm fairly sure it relates to the grocery trade. It's not Chamber of Commerce (that was my first thought). Lived in Cardiff all his life.
