Can anyone identify this WWII Service No.?? + 2 & 13 PARA WWII.
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 19:23 BST (UK) »
My uncle was with PARAS in WWII, before he joined them,  he was with the RAF Volunteer Force and other Regs.
He remembers this Service Number, and thinks it was RAF (but it could be PARA or Army too, I suppose).
The No is 1600593
I should make it clear, it was not his service number, but someone he knew - while he can recall the number, he can't recall who it was! :)

I have an abbreviated list of his service attachments, I can understand most I believe, except  'DLL'  - is it the 'Devonshire Light'.... or something?

In case it helps with identifying the number the abbreviations I have are:  (you can correct me if I'm wrong ;D:)

RAFVR  - RAF  Volunteer Reg
GSC  - General Service Corps
DLL
SWB- South Wales Borderers
2 Para 1 Div
13 Para 6 Div
NS - North Somerset Reg.
AAC - Air Army Corps.

I'd welcome contact with anyone interested in 2 PARA or 13th PARA during and post WWII....

Hi there,
I can't identify the service number for you but your Uncle may well have retined this number throughout his service.
My father joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers(Territorials) as a lad in 1927 and was issued with his service number.
In 1929 he joined the regular army, signing up for 3years, and kept the same number. He left the army in 1932.He was then called up in 1939 and retained the same service number.
I don't know if that would be the case for transferring from RAFVR to the Army, but it may well be.
Best of luck in your research.

From a find at Fold3:

Frederick Gilbert Fisher, Flight Sergeant, 578 Sqn. had the number 1600593

He flew 29 bombing operations as a wireless operator over Germany and was awarded DFC 18th January 1945.

Apparently 578 squadron was formed at RAF Snaith then transferred to RAF Burn. Both in Yorkshire, RAF Burn near Selby.

NS - North Somerset Reg.- No such regiment existed
This could possibly be a reference to the North Somerset Yeomanry

Possibly but as they were cavalry until 1942 and then a Royal Signals Regiment it would be an odd place for him as a AAC/Paratrooper to be sent.

Many thanks for all your responses, Flight Sargent Fisher may be him, anyone related to him out there?  Unfortunately, my uncle has now passed, but his son is still interested to know more if possible.  NS is still a bit of a mystery....
I have a photo of my uncle in para training with others, if any suspect it might have an image of their relative, please PM me....the photo would date from 1944, pre Market Garden.
