Heywood has cracked it!

The entry is signed by Durand Hotham. I was wondering if the mystery had anything to do with the way were conducted marriages under the Protectorate.

It does say Winthrop but throp and thorp are very interchangeable. And thank you JenB for the extra information on Wynthorpe. (You posted that as I was typing my post)

Yes I have read it...the Hothams are quite well documented in Hull and Ye Olde White Harte in Hull and it's Plotting Parlour where Charles the 1st was refused entry is also very interesting. This place almost speaks to you it is so atmospheric....if you google the pubs name you will see the beauty of it and it's history makes fascinating reading.
