What would be my next step?
« on: Friday 03 April 15 11:49 BST (UK) »
I've found my 5x Great Grandfather Ralph Brierley, and a marriage record for him to a Matilda Ward in 1850 in St. Mary's, Oldham, Lancashire, England.  It lists both of their fathers (Thomas Brierley and William Ward), but not their mothers. What would be my next step be in finding out more about Matilda?

How old was Matilda on her marriage? If you can find her in 1841 that may give her mother's name.

Unfortunately, the marriage info doesn't include her age at the time.  I know it's not very accurate, but since I know my Grandfather was born in Saddleworth, Yorkshire in 1830, I've found a Matilda Ward also born in Saddleworth in 1828 who's father's name is also William and mother's name is Hannah - but I can't be sure that's her.  If it is, that Matilda Ward I found on the 1841 Census, but she's a servant in a household, so parents weren't listed.

Did Matilda die before 1861? Is this Ralph then?

That is Ralph! He then remarried (Susan Griffith in 1865) and had more kids - but my direct relation is through the marriage to Matilda, so I was hoping to find her parents.  I found a death for a Matilda Brierley in Jan of 1861 in Saddleworth, but not with any valuable information attached to it.

In 1851 Ralph is an apprentice blacksmith and is given as married, but Matilda isn't with him. So we need to find her in 1851.

I think I found her in 1851 in Saddleworth, listed as Matilda Brierley (married) but she was the house servant to a family called the Buckleys, and Ralph isn't with her.

Oh bother - she's working as a servant!  At least that gives POB and date about 1829.
