William Johnson transported on the Marion 2
« on: Sunday 05 April 15 07:03 BST (UK) »
I have read so many posts but feel I just keep getting lost due to such a common name. Born abt 1824 I believe my GGGF William Johnson was in the Rifle Brigade, I think his native place was Andover-Hampshire, married with 3 children. This I got from the archives of Tasmania, but did have trouble reading it so it may not be 100% correct (don't know who he was married to) At age 23 he was charged with desertion and sentences 7 years, transported on the Marion 2 to Van DL.  Here I found he married Ann Dyke and had 7 children. I am trying to confirm his military background but that also is a mine field, and then I lost him from 1861 when he was a police officer in Tasmania. I would love to hear from anyone that knows where and when he died and if they have any military records of him and who it was that he was married to in England. ??? Appreciate even a little bit of info, kind regards

Hi robandrob2

First of all, I'd suggest you ask a moderator to move this to the Australia board.

Was he married to Ann Dyke in Tasmania or elsewhere?  Where were the children born?
Many convicts from Tasmania 'migrated' to the mainland when they were able, mostly to Victoria.
Have you looked there for his death?
If you can give names and dates for the children, people may be able to find them more easily.

Thank you Dawn M, still trying to find my way around. Don't understand a lot of this but I will find my way.
He marryed Ann Dyke in Tasmania 1851 and all the children he had with her were born in Tasmania but they were put into the orphanage. Just had some feed back that his original surname name was Lowe (not confirmed) Children used either Dyke or Johnson as their name. John B: 1851, Mary Anne B: 1853-1939, Amelia B:1855, Henry Thomas B: 1857, George Edward Dyke (my GGrandfather) B:1859- 1929 Riana
Kind regards and thankyou for your time Rob

A link to previous discussion about William JOHNS(T)ON(E) and Ann DYKE

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=653762.0

His convict records:

So there were two William JOHNSONs on the Marion (2).  I think yours is this one:

Conduct Record
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON33-1-70,313,148,L,80

Indent
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON14-1-31,260,68,L,80 (page 1)
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON14-1-31,260,69,L,80 (page 2)

His activities match the info so far and the other one was much older and still serving his sentence in 1851, so not "free".

He was a watchman in 1846, and may have gone on to become a constable.  He had been a soldier, and convict soldiers tended to be more often appointed as constables.  Both he and Ann were in Oatlands at the same time.

The above link to William's indent gives details of his wife and other family:

Wife Leah (living at) New Brunswick (Canada)
Father William, Mother Jane, Brother Thomas, Sister Jane (living at) Wales

(Bracketed info is mine)

He was aged 23 and court martialled at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 27 August 1844.  He had been in the Rifle Brigade for 5 years.

Thank you so much, you are all so quick and good at this. Does anyone know about  his real surname being Lowe? I was told there was a girl 15, Eliza Lowe (sister)also tried when William was 18 years and charged for stealing, 4 Dec 1843 at Salford. Regards rob

There is an armed forces marriage indexed at Findmypast for a William JOHNSON in New Brunswick but you need a subscription to view it, or access the site free at most libraries.  When I put 'Leah' in the spouse first name box it comes up negative but it would be worth having a look at anyway in case it is mispelt or mistranscribed.  It should give the man's regiment.

Can you explain how the connection was made between Eliza LOWE and your William JOHNSON?  Perhaps someone is looking at a different William?

Info given, William Johnson aged 18 charged 4 Dec 1843 at Salford for stealing one ham and two pieces of bacon the property of WM. Barber and transported for  7 years. Native Place Bury. Father Edward, Brothers Joseph & Thomas, Sisters Elizabeth & Eliza. Manchester. On the same day as William was tried there was an Eliza Lowe 15 tried . Looks like, convicted LC 9 m On Williams prison report it apparently stated, proper name Edward Lowe, Protestant, can read. Arrived 16/9/1845 Probation Pass Holder  30/5/1846 Was appointed a constable on 6/9/1851 resigned 30/12/1851. Thank for your time, I am not sure about this info but so much also marries up. ;D ;D hopefully closing in. Rob
