Japanese surrender Singapore 1945 - photo from other side of steps ?
« on: Sunday 05 April 15 14:45 BST (UK) »
In my late father's photo album there's the picture he took below of Mountbatten reading the "Japanese surrender" on steps of the municipal building in Singapore 1945.  From the angle of the picture I'm guessing he must have been in the area circled on the second picture near the top of the steps to the left side (if you were facing up the steps).  Looking at various pictures online there were many cameras both official and non-officlal like my father (he got a dressing down as they were not really supposed to be there and certainly not taking pics).

Does anyone know of any pictures taken from the other side of the steps as these might show my father who would have been in naval whites (thin, dark hair... yup, I know, doesn't narrow it down much  ::)  )

thanks for any help

Thanks ShaunJ, I'd found that one but I think he's literally going to be just out of frame to the left   :-\

Hi,
Have you found one yet - that has what you want on it ?

Photos taken by servicemen were supposedly 'rounded up' as they only wanted 'official' views, however, I have an amateur one from the other side but it is taken before Mountbatten comes out - i.e. when the Japanese officers are being marched down the steps - sorry but it's not clear or well focused and the scene is pretty crowded with not many naval types being shown the other side.

Also, following on from my last comment about this -
Have you tried to get a blown up still from the "Movietone"/AP Newsreel :

JAPAN SURRENDERS TO LORD LOUIS - 1945

At 4mins 18seconds in, there is a shot of the left hand steps crowd (again this is before MB shows).
