My mothet new hers ... I'm sure  in years gone by be for all this info became seachable ... family names etc were passed down the family or century's

But there again - this is 1845 we're talking about  ???  How many of us (excluding family historians), now in the 21st century would know our mother's maiden name?   :-\ :-\

Wasn't it quite common in Scotland to keep your maiden name and use it alongside your married one? So Ann may well have known her mother's maiden name.

I dont know anything on that ... maybe some one else might know more on scotland traditions
