Wow!  💐💐💐💐💐💐 Thanks everyone - what a delight it is to wake up to all these extra findings!  I will certainly follow through on them.  So much for me going out in the garden today - this is much more riveting stuff than that!

I also found some ads in the FindMyPast results yesterday as well, citing John Gibbons Mathews as Secretary of a couple of Insurance companies.  Of course that also told me that he hadn't yet joined up with the Lancers. So I now have a time frame between the date of those entries and 1845 when he married Mary Jane.

I'm off now to try to build on what you have all found, so grateful thanks to you all again.

Cheers
Jeanne 😄

Don't know if this is a possibility

Waterford Mail 26 February 1840
In Monasterevin Mr. David Fleming, formerly Quartermaster Royal Artillery

Have had a look at the map, not familiar at all at where I am looking, but it's not too far from Portarlington

This was the only military ref. I could find but there are more for him in Monasterevin

That looks interesting Willsy. I'll look further into that. I just recall that I did have a reference to a David Fleming Cork Manufacturer, in Dublin. But nothing else, just a name. Not had a military reference though.   Thanks.

Nothing came of the address given in the Marriage record as Triton Terrace, where Mary Jane is stated to be living at the time of her marriage.

As it has turned out that Henry Mathews was deceased at the time of the marriage, it's quite feasible that David Fleming was also deceased by then.

Thanks for your contribution.

At sea on NORTHUMBERLAND, 10 days out from departure. Death recorded in Victorian Gazette, 6 Feb, 1864. I believe that John's sister Sarah and her husband John Potter may have been living in Geelong Victoria at this time, but not yet been able to confirm.

Sorry, should have done this the other way round.

I've copied this from my Overview so that you know more where I am with John Gibbons Mathews, although as you can see I have a good deal of data about him.

Thanks Willsy, for the Employment Record, I don't like to tell you I already had it after all your hard work.

I'm quite happy to also post the overview for his father, Henry Maxwell Mathews, if that will help better to show what I do have on him, plus the extras on this thread that you wonderful team of sleuths have already found for him.

Thanks so much again and again.

Cheers
Jeanne 😄

The death notice keeps bugging me and I can't help but keep looking for a clue. Rev Robert Potter is mentioned in the papers, perhaps a bit more about sister Sarah would help but it's getting late...

Thanks Willsy, you're really helpful.

I've been trying to find the Potters in Western Australia, since this newspaper entry from the new FindMyPast newspaper releases last Friday.

Marriage Notice

John Potter, eldest son of the late Rev. Robert Potter, Incumbent of Louisburgh, to Sarah Annie, daughter of the late Henry Maxwell Mathews Esq. of Newbridge, County Westmeathdaughter of the late Henry Maxwell Mathews Esq. of Newbridge, County Westmeath

A Rev Robert Potter  b Louisburgh, who was later to become canonised, went to Western Australia, some family was already there.  I'll need to check that again, I think it was his obit on Trove.

I too have thought maybe through records for Sarah, that I could maybe find who who mother was, also Sarah Annie ?.something! Of course LOL! Tried Ancestry member trees for does, no joy there. I thought that if someone had a Canon for an ancestor, there was sure to be a tree on there, but haven't found one yet!  Oh well, thats the game we play - wars to fight, sermons to preach, mountains to climb, oceans to sail, trains to ride, coal, gold and graves to dig for!

The thrill of the chase, and the all the excitement and sometimes frustration that comes with a new little something.......  But we will get there!

Thank you, thank you all for your help.

Cheers
