Emil Peterson b. 1867 in Hejedby, Gotland Sweden.
« on: Wednesday 08 April 15 22:26 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to find more information on Emil Peterson. I only know his year & place of birth and that he was a sea man. I have his data after he immigrated to America in 1897.
Any information on his parents & grandparents would be swell to know.

Thank you,
Donna

Hi Pooziej

I have a family here in Visby, Gotland:

Pettersson, Nils Magnus b.1835 - Father
Norrby, Sofia Albertina Augusta b.1836 - Mother
Carl Johan August b.1861
Axel Wilhelm b.1864
Oscar Emil b. Hejdeby 14 July 1867

Oscar Emil was a sailor and was reported missing in the "missing persons" book between 1881-1890.
Here is an explanation of these books: http://www.arkivdigital.net/swedish-genealogy/non-existing-persons-book
I haven't found him yet in this book

I have found 3 entries of Oscar Emil in the Swedish Seaman Database too.

Thank you for your reply. I was wrong about his immigration to America. (I shouldn't rely on my faulty memory!) He came in 1890.

I rechecked the 1900 census record and his birth data is June 1867. Very close to your data. I have found many times different months of birth as well as different years documented so will say the fellow you found is looking very, very promising. Name of Emil, place of birth, year of birth & that he was a sea man...all fits really well!

What year did you find this family in Visby?

Hmmm. I wonder when he was reported as missing? It could very well be due to his immigration in 1890.

Thank you,
Donna

I found this family in Visby from 1881 or so onwards.

Do you have his imigration papers. As he was a sailor it is more likely he jumped ship. I have seen many seaman do this.

Ian,

Thank you. I agree that he may have jumped ship. He was fairly young. Not much choice of what to do back then I think. May be why he left.
No, I do not have his papers. I am helping my cousin to find data on Emil. I just wanted a to find a bit more on his family and will direct her to where she can look for more info (if she wants more).
In America he was a coal miner to start with, then he was a sign painter and later he owned a trucking business with his son. Jack of all trades!  :-) Emil of all trades!! Ha!

Thanks!
Donna

Do you know how your cousin knows his birth place?
Also who did he marry in USA?

I have been doing the research for her. Quasi-genealogist here. I found him in the 1900 census in Pennsylvania & in later census records in Jamestown, N.Y. The 1900 census had his month & year of birth as well as immigration year. I had posted on the Swedish genealogy site on Facebook and they found his immigration & place of birth.

He had married Matilda Brostrom & they found her place of birth & parents.

I have also posted on Ancestry asking about Emil but got reply so I thought I would try here. I LOVE this site!!!

I gave her links to Anbytarforum to make further inquiries if she wants. Just trying to get a good start for her.

Thanks,
Donna
