CD-R problem (video vanished)
« on: Friday 10 April 15 21:43 BST (UK) »
This is so weird that I hardly dare even ask...
I was sent a video recorded on an audio CD-R 700MB disc. It played fine on my computer. Now when I try to play it again the disc seems to read as empty apart from a very small file with a line of text.
Any idea what has happened? All I did was play it, eject the disc and wait a few days. I am mystified. I tried it on a different computer and it was just the same. I can't have deleted it  :(
Thanks.

Did you actually close the file when finished or just eject it??

Hi

"A line of text"
What did it say, anything relevant?

What type of video was recorded onto the audio CD-R disc?
VCD (Video Compact Disc) or the enhanced SVCD (Super Video Compact Disc)
which would either be a compressed MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file.

Were any error messages displayed and if so what?

Any other info that might be helpful to the guru's here.

Do other CD's work in the same drive?
When you examine the disc what files are on it?
Has the disc been damaged?
Can you get another copy?

Thanks for all the replies!

1. Yes I did close the file and I thought that I removed it safely.
2.  Where I would expect to see the video file it says "Files ready to be written to disc (1)" and then that (notepad) file says
[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21815
if that is any help.
3. My daughter could only see that on her computer too.
4. I have no idea what sort of file the video is/was. It opened fine with Windows media player before.
5. I can get another copy I'm sure, it is just annoying that I need to. I'm writing English subtitles for the dratted thing and I have the written script. I just want to double check the timings before I return the work and since I am doing the job via someone else I have to get her to ask for a 2nd copy on my behalf.  :(
6. Yes, a bought DVD works fine in there. I have sometimes had trouble getting it to read a parish record CD, lots of whizzing and no actual reading sometimes.

I don't see any error message anywhere so i just don't understand it.

So there's a file ready AND WAITING to be written to disc... the disc was taken out.. so the computer can't write to the disc that wasn't there!

What you can try is...put disc in, ignore any messages... then open Media Player.... look for that file/recent played files... see if it is there (possibly as a tmp file)..close it properly from there.

As someone who produces CDs for a living I would suggest the CD was not closed before it was sent to you.

CD-R is a format conceived to allow a single writing and multiple plays of the CD. If it is not closed after being written a subsequent playing may allow a further track to be written giving the impression the CD is empty.

Have you checked the free space on the disk by right clicking on the CD icon. If properly closed it should show 0 free space.
The used space should also be shown.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I still couldn't get it to play, so I asked for a copy via Dropbox - so much easier in any case. I have now saved the dratted video in multiple locations!
