Andrew Proudfoot Clark, Kirkaldy, Fife d 1989 (obit/photo wanted)
« on: Sunday 12 April 15 05:21 BST (UK) »
Now this is kind of annoying. For years my family thought we had no Clark relatives.

I just got this mans details today his father was David Clark and his mother Annie Ireland.

Andrew Proudfoot Clark was born 1907 in Dysart died 1989
and the same with his sister.
Jessie Dougall Gray Clark was born 1904 in Dysart died 1982

The thing is they have the same parents as my David Clark born 1894. There would be a 10 year gap between David and Jessie. How does that even happen?

The parents were David Clark and Annie Ireland married at Kingskettle in 1893

Could this explain why gr.grandad David Clark born 1894 in Edinburgh never mentioned them?
I can't seem to get this mans birthcert of sp! We know his parents from death cert and we know they lived in Dysart, next door to his wife, Isabella Lister.

Andrew Proudfoot Clark and his wife Alison Baird Taylor (or Gilchrist) are both deceased now. It would have been nice to know of them earlier. And I'd love to see a photograph.

Jessie Clark didn't marry, I think.

Hi there,

Having seen that you mentioned a Lister relative and my husband also has a Lister relative, I took a wee look on Scotlands People to see if I could find out a bit more about the family.

Have you had a look on Scotlands People?  How did you find out about Andrew and Jessie?

Jessie did indeed marry and her marriage certificate is on SP showing a marriage to a Thomas Watson Carr in 1934 in Kirkcaldy and her brother, Andrew appears to have been one of the witnesses.  The certificate also states that her father was deceased at that point.

I also found several people who have passed away with the Clark surname whose Mother's maiden name was Ireland and who could have been children of David Clark and Annie Ireland or Clark.

One of these people was Annie Ireland Clark who seems to have been born c.1900 and got married to a James Falconer in 1928 in Lochgelly.  This certificate also shows that her father was deceased at this point.  The certificate also states that she was a widow and her previous married name was Laurie, however, I can't find a marriage for those names.  Funnily enough, I have Laurie in my tree too!

At the turn of the last century, many people had large families with big differences in ages of the children so it seems it was quite easy for them not to be very close.  My Maternal Great Granny started having children in 1887 and stopped in 1909 (15 in total) and many of their families did not know the others and never realised the size of their family!  Family life was quite different!

All the best,

My information is off Scotlandspeople birth, death, marriage and census.

Jessie Dougall Gray Clark died with that name, so it seems unlikely that the Jessie you mention is the same person.

My interest is around the Clarks and Listers that lived on Strathern Road, Dysart since we have family papers from that period of time that were removed from Scotland during WW2.

Hi there,

The Jessie I mentioned is indeed the daughter of David and Annie as I have viewed the marriage certificate.  She is listed not only under her maiden name in the death index listing on SP but also with the other name of Carr.  Annie Ireland Clark or Laurie or Falconer is also a child of David and Annie.  There may be more as these are the only 2 marriages I looked at and I have not viewed any births.

I think I might have my family:

David Clark 28 1873 born Fife
Annie (Ireland) 26 1875 born Leven
David Clark 6  1895 born Leven
Helen Clark 5  1896 born Kirkaldy
Annie Clark 0  1901 born Kirkaldy

I remember discounting this family as I was confused by the name Helen but it makes sense now as David Clark born 1873 was the son of a Helen Wilkinson from Kettlehill.

So perhaps I need to go into the next census then I will pick up
Andrew Proudfoot Clark 1907
and
Jessie Doughall Clark 1904

I was totally unaware of Helen, Annie, Andrew and Jessie when I started this family tree.

Mucking around in the Sp index I can only see 4 deaths with the mothers maiden name Ireland and fathers name Clark in Fife. The 5th child died in NZ.

Thankyou Carolineasb :)

Finally I found them in the 1911 using Jessie Clarks details!

David born in Kingskettle (actually Kettlehill)
Annie born in Scoonie (other name Leven)
David born in Wemyss !!! (death cert stated Edinburgh)
Nellie W.S? (I think is Helen Wilkinson Clark) born Kirkaldy
Annie, Jessie and Andrew born in Dysart.

Still have not managed to get the birth cert of David Clark born 1895. Frustrating and expensive but at least I know he was not born in Edinburgh.

I'm pretty shocked that there may have been another child born in 1919 called Gwendoline Clark, who died aged 94

Jessie Clark married Thomas Watson Carr in 1934 in Kirkcaldy.

I wonder if this is him

Hi, I am tracking the same tree, my Mother Ann Clark Carr is the daughter of Jessie.  Jessie and Thomas had 4 children Ann Clark, Margaret, Isobel and Jack. We have lost contact with family in Scotland as my mother passed away in 1999.
