I was wondering whether anyone would be able to assist in my search for information surrounding my great Uncle who was taken prisoner at Monte Cassino, and transported to Stalag VIIIC. Sadly he passed away aged 96 in December 2014. I had spoken to him about his adventures as he said about WWII as a child, and later in life as most men who served in the war, he spoke more frankly to me about his exploits as I was to a serving member of the Royal Marines and faced small but similar situations. I have details of his POW registration and his MIA telegram sent to his mother. I do know that he did escape from Stalag VIIIC and evaded capture across Germany to Belgium where he was picked up by American troops. He escaped with a Dutch soldier and a German soldier who had deserted. As has been stated by several people the National Archives are not that user friendly and you have a recommendation from another visitor searching for answers.
If you could assist in finding information what would you require from me and if you can't could you point me in a direction that could help. I appear to be at a dead end with my enquiries, as I am aware in preparation for the 'Long March' the Germans destroyed many of the documents held by them when they extracted the POW's back into Germany to hide many atrocities. I am also aware that VIIIC was overshadowed by it's closeness to Stalag Luft 3 and it's association to the 'Great Escape'.
Any help would be very much appreciated
