John Gunn Grant
« on: Monday 20 April 15 05:24 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know anything about John Gunn Grant. All I have is that he was born 23.9.1840 in Latheron, Caithness and that his parents were Daniel Grant and Elizabeth Mackay. I have him in the 1851 census and then know more. Have tried Scotlands people. Also his brother Archibald Cook Grant b 15.6.1838.
Thanks.

Have you checked Orkney? A lot of Caithness and Sutherland people went to Orkney for work

and vice versa.

There is this one in 1861 in Stronsay which is part of Orkney.
John Grant 20 Yrs Ploughman

Born Latheron Caithness ca 1841

Still looking for 1871 census. Do you have any other information concerning John?

Do you know who he married, or where he died?

You've said "All I have is that he was born 23.9.1840 in Latheron, Caithness and that his parents were Daniel Grant and Elizabeth Mackay. I have him in the 1851 census and then know more."  Just wondering if 'know' is a typo for 'no' so unclear whether you have information after 1851 or no information.

If you are looking for post 1851 info, there is an Archibald Grant, 20, visitor, labourer, b Latheron Caithness, on the household of Robert Towers, shoemaker, New Voy, Sandwick, Orkney (RD 27 ED 4, p 10 property 36). There are also two male lodgers who were born in Latheron.
