My grandmother born 1885 Miss Nellie Jane WILLIAMS
« on: Monday 20 April 15 17:04 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was head parlour maid at Keddlestone Hall, and when Lord Scarsdale went on a family holiday my grandmother would also go to look after the children, just wondered if anyone else knows about this.  She stayed there until her marriage to Mr Arthur Henry Stone  both sfrom Branston.

Hi Nicola,

In 1891 Census Nellie Williams is at home in Branston with parents James & Violetta Williams & siblings, she is listed as Nellie Williams aged 5.

In 1901 Census she is not listed at Kedleston Hall Derbyshire.

Just to fill you in on the Curzon Family (Lord Scarsdale), by 1881 he was a widower and his youngest child was aged 9.  He did not re-marry.  So his youngest child would have been 19
by the time of the 1891 Census when Nellie was aged 5.

Wondered if this is a family story over time it has become mixed up?

I have been unable to find your Nellie in the 1901 Census do you have any information?

Hi Nicola,

I think I have found Nellie in the 1901 Census.

She has been transcribed as Nellie William, aged 12 however if you look at the actual image it is Nellie Williams aged 16 born Branstone Staffordshire.

1901 Census Piece - 2642, Folio - 150, Page Number - 11
40 New Street, Burton On Trent Staffordshire.

She is a Domestic Servant in the House of Joseph Smith, a Butcher.

If you go back to the 1871 census for Kedleston Hall, when Lady Curzon was still alive and there were several young children in the house, there is a laundry maid called Harriet Dagly or Dagby who was born in Branston, Staffs approx 1851. Could she be the connection, but a generation earlier?

Added: FreeBMD has birth reg of Harriet Dagley in Burton on Trent district Q4 1850, so I think this is same Harriet.

Harriet married William Shipton in Lichfield district and according to later censuses stays in Yoxall, nr Lichfield to raise a family. So not looking as if she is connected to Nellie.
