Quinn Family Glasgow
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 10:28 BST (UK) »
Hello my name is claire and I have just joined this forum.  Been doing family history for several years now and have just started a tree for my cousin.  She is trying to find the family of her mother phyllis quinn who passed away in 1998 in cadder street,  Glasgow.  Phyllis was born in 1942 in baltic street glasgow to william quinn and sarah jane maharg.   Phyllis came from a large family, she was first married in 1959 for 5 years when her husband divorced her as she had a child to someone else during their marriage.  In 1966 she married my uncle and went on to have 2 more children - this marriage didn't last and the children were brought up by their father.

Welcome to rootschat, Claire.

Have you found the marriage date for William and Sarah - as Phyllis came from a large family it could be several years before 1942?

Does your cousin know when and where her grandparents died, or was contact lost?

Thank-you

A free search on scotlandspeople shows the marriage in 1933 in Glasgow City.

Have you got the full details from the website?

I cannot see the birth of Sarah Jane Maharg on scotlandspeople.

I can see a family of Mahargs in Glasgow in 1901, but cannot read the image from ancestry as not provided.
George Maharg   28
Sarah Ann Maharg      27
Isabella Maharg    2
Catherine Maharg   3 months

but cannot see the birth for Isabella/Catherine on scotlandspeople so wondered how the spelling has been recorded.

Added:
George and Sarah's marriage looks to be 1896, Glasgow.
This is for information only, as just seeing if I could find it, as problems with spelling.
No connection shown with your family

Hi there, William and sarah were married in 1932, I got this from Phyllis birth cert.  My cousins never saw their mother from approx. 1970 as my uncle had sole custody and emigrated to SA although he did send them over for a visit and he did let their mother know and it was one of her sisters who opened the letter and said Phyllis had disappeared at that time but she was going to look for her, this was unsuccessful.  My cousins have no info at all and not a subject my uncle has ever been keen to talk about.  It's the boy Phyllis had which resulted in her divorce, their half-brother they are interested in trying to trace as they do remember him.  From her death certificate there was another daughter as well, nothing from that although she has probably moved away.

You have said that Phyllis married in 1959 and divorced 5 years later, because of a son from another man.

So the son born in the 1960's.

Unfortunately rootschat has a no living persons policy, so you need to go to another site if you want to try and trace him.

If he is remembered, then do they know his name(only, do not put it on here, but you can on other websites)?

From the death certificate, you have another daughterr's name - have you tried to trace her?

Do you know the name of Phyllis's first husband?

Have you identified all the children?

You can use scotlandspeople, and the marriage was in 1959 in Glasgow.

Hi, yes I was being careful about not writing names.  Yes we have the name and birth cert for the son born in 1963, I can remember him as well.   Her first husband was a William Donaldson and I got all this from scotlandspeople and we know the name of the son's father.  scotlandspeople is a brilliant site, both mine and my husband's fathers being from Scotland.    I wasn't expecting to find the son from this site, but just thought it might be possible that it could throw up something about William and sarah.  My cousin wrote to the other daughter but didn't get any response but she would probably have moved on by now anyway
