John Masson and Elizabeth Nicol had 9 children between1855 and 1876. all of them except Robert Nicol appear in at least one census with the family, I can find most of their marriages and their deaths. the on-line trees I have seen usually have some of the siblings but not all. I started with a hand drawn tree from my father-in-law - good except he missed some of his uncles and aunts who had died in childhood. I have not tracked one (Agnes) through too many choices - she does not seem to have died in Scotland.

Robert did have a brother Alexander, but he seems to have stayed in the Montrose area. I will check again - Thank you again

Thank you all for your suggestions and I am sorry I have not replied earlier. I am 70 years old and managed to hurt my knee - typical netball injury though I have not played netball since I was about 15. I am now off crutches but am still using a walking stick - causes all sorts of other aches and pains.

Robert Nicol Masson - he is mentioned on his mothers death certificate which finally found on Scotland's people - spelling differences. Following this I have found him living with his mother in 1911 - also on Scotland's people.

His maternal grandparents were deceased.
Have not fully tracked his paternal grandparents.

The suggestion about the two Williams in the 1881 census is probably correct. The census shows 2 Williams so maybe the error was transcription between the householders schedule form and the enumeration book. I now know a lot more about census taking. Still looking for the other entries and will follow up your other suggestions
