Welcome to Rootschat
Civil registration of births began in 1864 in Ireland
The surname O Connell is found throughout the whole country.
Do you have any idea of which part of Ireland they are from.

Obituary if any exist may give some idea of origin

Hi I have some family that came from Ireland into Maine, USA. John O'Connell 1838 married to Mary O'Connell born in 1843. Their son was my great grandfather Charles J OConnell 1871 - 1917 (died of the Spanish flu in Boston, MA.

It may help if you try to find as much possible about them in the US and then work back from there to hopefully place them in a specific town or county in Ireland.  There may be helpful information in their marriage/death records, obituaries for them or any other family members in the US, their children's birth records, census records, any passenger lists, passports, or naturalization records, etc.
