1901 censuses show several John Hughes born within a year or so of 1898, with a father called Hugh. Several in Wales ( not surprising), and one in Yorkshire are the ones I immediately see with the best age-match. Both mining areas.
To narrow it down you need to know more. Was this a first marriage, at 41, or had he been married before?
