George Carter
« on: Monday 27 April 15 16:10 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birth record for my great-grandfather George Carter. According to Census entries he was born in Alton, Hampshire, England around 1861. I have a copy of his marriage certificate from 1889 in Godalming, Surrey which gives his father's name as Thomas Parfitt Carter but I can find no trace at all of him.

I cannot find George on any Census prior to 1891. Can anyone shed any light please?

In the absence of any evidence for the existence of Thomas Parfitt Carter and George before the 1891 census, I would suggest that George was possibly illegitimate and made up the father's name on the marriage cert for the sake of propriety.

I could suggest his father might have been Thomas Parfitt (not Carter) as there are Parfitts in the Alton area on the censuses around George's birth.

Thanks for that suggestion, it sounds the most likely at the moment. I will investigate Parfitts.
