How about this for a string of inaccuracies.

David Allan, born Forfar 14 July 1826,
Married Ann Thom in Montrose on 31 December 1855, parents named as George Allan, linen manufacturer, and Janet Burns.
Stone dyker
Six children, all born in Montrose.
In 1901 census with wife and two sons at 42 Murray Street, Montrose.
Buried in Montrose 5 February 1909, stone dyker, 42 Murray Street, wife Ann Thom, parents George Allan and Jessie Barnes, date of death 1 February 1909
Widow in Montrose in 1911 with same two sons.

Death certificate? Thanks to a bit of sleuthing by SP staff - John Allan, stone dyker, 42 Murray Street, died 1 February 1909, wife Ann Low, parents David Allan, stone dyker, and Ann Grant, informant John Allan, son. I make that six major errors - given name, wife's surname, father's given name, father's occupation, mother's given name, mother's surname.

Hi Forfarian,
Just re- reading through this post and realised the example you gave is the David Allan married to Davidina's sister! Exceptionally easy to track through the census given they stay put on Murray Street glad I never went seeking his death certificate - maybe son John had been to the pub before registering the death.

Yes, it is indeed the same family. Caused me a lot of headscratching before we finally got it.

Hi all. I'm new to the group so play nice  ;)
My Mother is a Dakers. Grew up in Zambia and settled in South Africa.
Her father was John "Ian" Sharpe Dakers married to Jean Lockie Nicol.
Johns father was David Dakers 1868 married to Catherine Cook Sharp. His father David Dakers 1835 married Betsy Jane Jolly. His father James Dakers Married to Catherine Bain and Lastly his father was William and that is also where I end. I do not have birth dates for William.

On the Nicol side I go up to William Lockie Nicol 1885 so not so far. However there is a branch off onto the Black and Coldrey Families.
On the Jolly family I go up to John Jolly 1760 married to Margaret Young 1755.
Lastly my mother Suzanne Catherine Dakers married my father Henry Summers in 1976. I can follow the Summers line up to Thomas Summers 1720. Happy to share my xcel spread if anyone wants to try fill in the dots etc

PS apologies for the mass info if it is not useful :P

Hi SummersSA

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

This the Nicol/Black line you mention? https://ancestors.familysearch.org/G9VL-T8L/william-lockie-nicol-1884-1965

His death index entry states he was born in Edinburgh? www.familysearch.org/tree/sources/viewedit/3Y97-CS2

This looks to be his birth entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

WILLIAM LOCKIE NICOL
Mother's maiden name FOWLER
1884
Ref 685 / 2 / 949
St Andrew (Edinburgh)

Likely entry for a brother to William a few years earlier:

John LOCKIE NICOL
Mother's maiden name FOWLER
1881
Ref 685 / 1 / 1898
St George (Edinburgh)

John looks to have died in Canada in 1928. See www.findagrave.com/memorial/194574829/john-lockie-nicol

For John, his birth details:

John Lockie Nicol
Birth 2 Oct 1881 Edinburgh, St. George, Scotland
Father John Nicol
Mother Elizabeth Fowler

There are number of Nicol & Fowler births showing in Edinburgh. All boys:

1870 - Charles
1871 - Thomas
...a gap in the years, then
1880 - James Stewart
1881 - John
1883 - Robert Campbell
1884 - William
1886 - George

Parents' marriage in Edinburgh:

John NICOL & Elizabeth FOWLER
1869
685 / 2 / 159
St Andrew (Edinburgh)

You can view the marriage on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  It is pay to view but the costs are reasonable. Once you register, free to search. You only need to pay, via credits, to view images from the registers.

Scottish marriage certs include both parents' names for both bride and groom.

Some census entries to help establish the family:

1871 Census:

John Nicol 22 Grocer Shopman b. Innerleithen, Peebles
Elizabeth Nicol 24 Wife b. Loanhead Midlothian
Charles Nicol 9 months b. Edinburgh

Address 43a Brunswick St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

I think this may be John Nicol Snr's birth entry:

John Nicol, born 11 May 1848 at Innerleithen, Peebles. Parents Charles Nicol and Margaret Lockie (the source of the Lockie surname being used as a middle name for some of the sons of John and Elizabeth you would think).

1881 Census:

John Nicol 32 Shopman (Grocer)
Elizabeth Nicol 34
Charles Nicol 10
Thomas Nicol 9
James S Nicol 11 months
Mary Campbell 15 Visitor
John Campbell 31 Lodger

Address: 46 Torphichen St, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

1891 Census

Elizabeth Nicol 44 Head
Thomas Nicol 19 Life Insurance Clerk
James Nicol 10
John Nicol 9
Robert Nicol 8
William Nicol 6
George Nicol 4
Mary Campbell 25 Visitor

Address 7 Gillespie Crest, Newington, Edinburgh St Cuthberts

I am wondering if John, father, headed off to SA before some of the family joined him?

This is the 1901 census...and a hard working bunch of young men they turned in to:

Elizabeth Nicol 53 Head
James S Nicol 20 Insurance Clerk
John L Nicol 19 Law Apprentice
Robert C Nicol 18 Mercantile Clerk
William L Nicol 16 Mercantile Apprentice Meter Manufacturer
George Nicol 14
David R Nicol 10 b. Ireland

Address 2 Malta Terrace

There is a window between 1901 and 1904, when William married, when he would have travelled to SA. He was 20 when he married and there is a ref on his marriage reg www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TWL-9MH9?i=132&cc=1468076 confirming that his father had consented to the marriage due to his age.

I am wondering too if Elizabeth and John Snr parted ways after the birth of the boys?

Likely death entry for her in Edinburgh:

ELIZABETH ANN NICOL or FOWLER
Age 58
Mother's maiden name ----- (the informant looks to not know Elizabeth's mother's details possibly)
1906
Ref 685 / 1 / 38
St George (Edinburgh)

The sons seem to have spread round the world:

Thomas married Minnie (Mary) Cowan in Ireland in 1901. He shows in Ireland for 1911 census www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002170073/ He looks to have died in Edinburgh on 20 Jun 1924. His death registration will be available to view on SP. Should let you confirm if his father is showing as alive or deceased by 1924.

Thomas's marriage registration is available to view on https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp The site has some tech problems so I can't add link to the marriage so give it a try later.

Apart from son John being in Canada, son George I think also headed off there. He married Marie Petrie in Quebec in 1914 and shows in Montreal on the 1931 Canadian census.

William in SA and you have his details. I wonder if other brothers joined him?
