Hobbs / Nicholas of Chiswick / Wellington, Shropshire
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 20:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone could help me trace a marriage ?

My 3 x great grandfather, William Hobbs, was born in Chiswick about 1806. I believe his father was also William, as he lived in & owned cottages in Fisherman’s Place (formerly Sluts Hole) in Chiswick and there is a Deed of Premises listed at the NA for William Hobbs, dealer of coals, in 1805.

William jnr probably inherited the cottage as he lived there with his family until his death in 1866, when his daughter continued to live there.

William jnr was married to Sophia and they had at least 2 children, my 2 x ggf Adam Joseph (known as Joseph) born in 1825 and Sarah, born in 1827, both in Chiswick

From censuses Sophia was born in Wellington, Shropshire around 1798.  I have accessed the Parish records for Wellington for this time and have only found 2 Sophia’s baptised around this time.  One I have ruled out, so I am pretty sure that my Sophia is the daughter of John & Elisabeth Nicholas, baptised 25 March 1798.  John married Elisabeth Upton on 5 June 1797.

However without proof that I have the right Sophia I do not want to go further along this line. It may be that they were married (if they were) in Wellington or Chiswick and I would be very grateful if anyone has any information that may help.

My Hobbs family were posted in Roots Chat several years ago but unfortunately the member has not been active for 6 months.  Any further information would also be greatly appreciated

Many thanks
Lyn

Hi Lyn

Have you posted a reply on the other topic? I think there are a few started by Ewan.

If you do, the posters there should receive an email notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.

If not, you could try sending them a personal message.

Hi Dawn

No, sorry this is my first posting and as they were old postings I didn't realise I could do that.  Would it be okay to cut & paste into there?

I did look to see if I could private message Ewan but couldn't see how - sorry, I can find my way round censuses okay but forums are completely new to me

thanks for your advice
Lyn

Hi Dawn

That's great, I'll do that - and now I've made the first advance into Roots Chat I shall have to have a look at all my other tree branches. Seems a great site.

Thanks for the help and advice

best wishes
Lyn

Thanks looby711, and Dawn for your help.

Will have a look at my tree, I think the Hobbs are the very first family I have from Chiswick, all the rest follow on down to my mum.  Not sure I will be of help to you but I will look to see what I have and let you know.

Ewan

I was just browsing around for any new references to the colourfully named Sluts Hole and came across your post.  Your forebears were obviously in the upper echelons of the inhabitants, owning six tenements and two houses ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hoddy/My/malcolm.htm ), unlike mine who rented the same tenement over several generations for the best part of a century.

One coincidence struck me as interesting.  Your Sophia claims to hail from Wellington.  Stephen Jennings ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hoddy/My/p016.htm ) married Dinah Brown ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hoddy/My/p017.htm ) and she also claimed Wellington as her birthplace.  I could find no reference to her baptism in any Wellington register but did get a match of name and age from the registers of Wombridge, which is only 3 miles from Wellington, and oh look - there's a Sophia Brown baptised there in 1797...

The Brown in Fisherman's Place is called George.  Sophia's father was John and Dinah's father is Francis.  But it might be a coincidence worth pursuing.  Just a shame their surname wasn't a bit less unusual than Brown  :'(

Many  thanks for that info, I will certainly look into it.

It seems most of my ancestors had common names, so it would be my luck to come across a Brown.  I thought Hobbs might be quite an unusual name but unfortunately I was wrong. As for the upper echelons, I am beginning to doubt it.  Although William Hobbs owned part of Fisherman’s Place I cannot link him to my William (I am guessing William senior had no offspring as he leaves everything to his sister, and his late nephew, John’s family), so I am thinking it is just a coincidence.

It’s amazing to think that 154 years ago (1861 census) our descendants lived, presumably, next door to each other, as Steven & Dinah were living at no 4, and William at no 5 – I will re-read your excellent site with renewed interest

Best wishes
Lyn

Also, for your info - Susannah Chesterman was the sister of William Hobbs, who died in 1842. In his Will he actually left his property to his niece, Elizabeth Chesterman, who was living with him. This presumably is how the Chesterman's came to be living in Fisherman's Place
