Missing EDs??
« on: Friday 01 May 15 17:18 BST (UK) »
I have a suspicion that one or more of the EDs in a particular sub registration district may be missing from the Ancestry transcriptions.  Where can I find a list of what EDs should be in a particular RD so I can compare this with what is on Ancestry?

Which census? What enumeration district are you looking for? Perhaps we can find it for you.

You can search the National Archives catalogue like this (example 1861 census) to see what pages are missing:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=%22missing+pages%22+RG+9

Ancestry lists for each census the piece numbers that are known to have problems (missing part or all). You can also use the 'Browse this Collection' option to see which EDs are available for a given parish. For example, the here are the missing pieces for the 1851 census:

Thank you both.  I am looking at the 1891 England census for Oldham.  FindMyPast, for which I don't have a current sub,  has the people I am looking for but, as I'm sure you know, without a sub, one can't go further on to the image.  However, I cannot find the same people on Ancestry in the same town so my first thought was that perhaps the Ancestry database wasn't complete.  I hope this doesn't sound rude but I didn't want to ask for a look up, I prefer, at least initially,  to ask for a steer and work it out myself, that way I can aspire to get as good as you two!

Ancestry doesn't seem to list any missing/problems with the 1891 unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

From the National Archives (Alexander) I can get down to the 2 reg sub districts in the town but, again unless it is me, I can't see a breakdown of EDs which I could compare with the Ancestry lists.

So, still need another push towards enlightenment!

It could of course also be a transcription problem!

Hi

I've often found that FindMyPast is more accurate with its transcriptions than Ancestry so I'm going to guess that it's more likely that Ancestry has come up with a completely off-the-wall transcription than the pages are missing

If you can let us know what you can from the FindMyPast entry then we might be able to find it. Also those with subscriptions to both might be better able to see what Ancestry might have transcribed it as
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

OK, re-reviewing your post, I think what you would like is that, if it is a mistranscription, you would prefer to be told what Ancestry has transcribed it as rather than just the details of the record

Is that right?

Or maybe, just be told yes, it is on Ancestry, try harder?

Can you get where you want by using procat at TNA?

I'll contribute my twopenn'orth for what it's worth.  I'm fairly sure there are parts of Westmorland missing from the Ancestry 1851 census records (eg, Dufton).   I've raised this with them in the past but never had a satisfactory answer.

maxD - have you tried your local library - many of them now have access to FindMyPast!

Ancestry show 37 enumeration districts, plus Working Men's Home for Oldham Above Town
53 plus Union Workhouse and Wellocks Lodging House for Oldham Below Town

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
