Thanks to you all not sure how to reply to you individually this info is amazing I think it could be them as my great great grandmother is Martha. I have found Martha Excell on the 1871 census in Swansea could the other Excell on that census be her brother?? I know the other person on there George Townsend went on to become her husband. When viewing 1881 census Isaac Excell was noted as being an " idiot" could you define what this would mean thanks  :D

Hi Dentist,

Welcome to RootsChat :)

"Idiot" was often used interchangeably in the census as a general "catch all" for a variety of symptoms which are diagnosed differently these days.

There are several topics about this on Rootschat, which you can find under
Idiot / Imbecile / Lunatic / Feeble Mind in the
RootsChat Reference Library => Lexicon (click here)
(Tip: click on a category - on the right - for related topics)

regards,
Bob

It does look as if the Henry Michael Excell on the 1881 is her brother as he is 2 years younger than her, which fits with the ages on the 1861. Interesting that he was a lodger and she was a visitor - looks as if she just happened to be there on census night while visiting her brother.
