The James MacDermid who married Sarah Ross in Brooklyn in 1925 was my Uncle Jim. My father, David Ross, was Sarah's brother. I knew James and Sarah's children, my cousins James and Jean. Both James and Jean were much older than I; their children were my contemporaries.
You asked about “escape from poverty”. Certainly my Uncle Jim and Aunt Sarah lived a comfortable middle class life. I spent time at their homes in Dumont, NJ and in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
Indeed James and Sarah's son James died in 1977. I attended the funeral. I never knew my cousin James or his family well, and I have lost track of them.
I knew James and Sarah's daughter Jean better. Jean married a fellow named

(*) had two children,

(*). Jean died in 1994 in New Smyrna Beach.
