A school in Reading 1850s
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My GG Grandmother Clara Dodd 1830-1907 Bucklebury Berks, was a house servant to the school master at an address which I think is Russell Terrace in Reading.  There are 23 boarders aged 9-14. Does anyone know whether there was a school here in 1851 please?

Thanks very  much

Hi,

Slater's Directory of Berkshire, 1852 records Henry Horlock, Russell Terrace under Academies and Public School, There is an asterisk alongside the entry denoting that it is a boarding school. Unfortunately there is not a name for this school.

Hi, I used to work in Russell House near Russell Street in Reading and wondered whether this had been the school.

Having googled, it seems what was Russell Terrace was renamed Baker Street. Baker Street is a turning off Russell Street and still has many old buildings. Don't think this helps much tho!

Russell House is in Oxford Road nearby and nothing to do with the school you're looking for.

In the 1851 census Henry Horlock aged 35 was running a school at 8 Russell Terrace along with his wife Caroline and their two children with Clara as one of three house servants.  There is no name for the school.

Off topic:

Henry died 26 February 1860 with his will proved at Oxford (probate) 4 May 1860 by the oaths of Caroline Dutton Horlock aforesaid Widow the Relic and Henry Dutton Horlock of the same place Schoolmaster the son the executors.

In the 1861 census Caroline is still at 8 Russell Terrace running the school with five of her children living with her, still no school name.  Clara not listed.

In 1871 Caroline is living at 8 Bedford Place with four of her children and one grandchild living on the income from houses and interest on money.  Caroline died 23 July 1871, will proved 5 August 1871 , effects under £800 (approx. £36.5k spending worth of 2005s)
