Found an 1834 inquest report concerning the death (from cholera) of a girl named Ellen Lawrence who was under the protection of a Mrs Robinson who was proprietress of a seminary for young ladies in Notting Hill. Mrs Robinson's husband George Smith Robinson gave evidence from which it is clear that the Robinsons had several daughters.

Looking for more on this

On Findmypast.co.uk, there are a few more newspapers regarding this situation with what happened. What specifically are you looking for about Ellen or the Robinsons?

The originator of this thread is looking for information on a George Smyth Robinson who had 5 daughters with Elizabeth Ridout between 1819 and 1830, in particular anything which might explain why they  living in Paris 1819 to 1824, his occupation, and when he died.

Googling the name, there are several items, some from Rootsweb. So, this matter has been researched for some time, albeit without all chapter and verse being revealed. The British/French connection appears to have been silk weaving.

Britain declared War on Revolutionary France in 1793, if there, they were lucky to escape. When the War re-commenced in 1803, British citizens were interned until 1814.

I don't think there is any evidence  that either of them were in Paris in 1793, other than a possibly spurious LDS ancestral file which doesn't seem to be available any more.

George Smyth/Smith Robinson's wife was Elizabeth Ridout, daughter of Thomas Ridout, surgeon and apothecary of Herne, Kent. Elizabeth was baptised in Canterbury on June 12th 1791.

I haven't found any evidence of a marriage in Paris. On the contrary, if I'm reading her father's will correctly there is evidence that Elizabeth was not married at the time it was written (1827).

There is certainly evidence that they were in Paris in the period 1819-1824 when 2 of their 5 daughters were born. One of them (Helen) was baptised there per the RG33/62 register, the other (Matilda) was baptised in Canterbury in 1825.

He was alive circa 1844 with an address in King William Street, London, and property in Cheshire

It looks like that could be somebody else. See this entry in the 1841 census:

31 King William Street:

J Smyth Robinson 20
George do 15
(neither born in-county)

Ages were rounded down in that census so that George could have been aged 21 by 1844 and included in the Register of Electors. Far too young to be the one we are looking for.

Perhaps another clue that Elizabeth Ridout and George Robinson were not married:

Announcement re daughter Helen's marriage in 1843 in the Court Magazine;

"Ridout, Miss Helene Robinson, granddaughter of Thomas Ridout, esq., surgeon, to William F. Evans, esq; by the Rev. George May, at Hearne, Kent, Jan. 4. "

Thankyou for all those postings. most helpful .                                                                                 I am mystified with the idea put forward that  George and Elizabeth would not have been married. Elizabeth Ridout was a respectable woman and surely the birth of an illegitimate  child would not have been put in the newspaper?

If the Ridouts  were  Hugenots would Elizabeht be there on her own in that dangerous capital doing business , a woman?
