Underwood family Pothern

Tracing family of Thomas and Edith Underwood of Pothern Devon 1781 onwards. Ediths name was Rewallin/Rewallyn on their marriage in 1806 in Ottery St Mary.Son Thomas b1814 moved to Leighton Buzzard Bedfordshire

Hi Tazzie,
Cant help you with your family,but was curious about the area.
Pothern Devon.
I googled Pothern,it came up with do you mean Northern Devon.
That would make more sense perhaps as regards to area.
I hadn,t heard of Pothern.

Just a thought,hope it helps.

Hi Bennett,
 Glad to find I am not going mad (despite what husband says).Pothern confused me as well.I was curious as to the double entries on the I.G.I  all the family are listed as Pothern and also at Ottery St  Mary. Only thing is Ottery is not really North Devon is it?

Yes must agree with you Ottery St Mary,is classed as being East Devon,you got me curious now,will check it out,and get back to you,if not now,perhaps later on tonight.

Hi Tazzie,
Just had a look on I.G.I.
Saw it stated Of.Porthern.Devon.
Also just Porthern.Devon.
It could mean of Northern Devon.
In those days back then,it was Northern,East Devon,Mid Devon.
Perhaps one of the enumerators didnt know his North from his East,
silly I know,but possible.

   It does look as though this is the case.I search all Uderwood on the I.G.I for Devon and the closest I came was Northam which is North Devon but miles from other recorded family.Edith was born Edith Rewalling in Poltimore or Ottery  and she is possibly related to Charles Rewallyn who made virginials in the 1600s.One of the orininals is displayed in the museum in Exeter.
So my search will go onwards.
