Jason Patterson
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 20:51 BST (UK) »
In Eckford Cemetery in the Scottish Borders there is a war memorial with the names of the WW1 war dead. On the plinth of the memorial there is an additional name - Jason Patterson Eckford Steading.
I cannot find him on the Commonwealth War Graves site and I would like to find out who he was and why his name wasn't engraved with the others. The names of the WW2 war dead are about to be added to the memorial and his name could be added to the memorial itself and not just on the plinth, obscured by moss. If anyone can help I'd like to hear from you please!

Hi

Have you checked the Scottish 1911 census for an entry for him - nothing on the 1901 and no birth on Scotlands People

Jason is quite a modern christian name - only 10 "Jason's" on the Scottish 1901 although there are over 400 in England in 1901

Could his name be there as the designer of the memorial rather than as one of the war dead?

I doubt if he was the 'designer' as the memorial is just a large gravestone. Eckford Steading is a small  very old farmhouse. The present occupant knows about Jason Patterson but knows nothing about him. However I will certainly look on the 1911 census - thankyou. There's no point in me looking at the Eckford history website as I look after it - if I ever find Jason Patterson I'll add the information to the wedsite! Thankyou all for your replies.

Is there any chance that something got mixed up with the name over time and that it was actually Jasper Younger Paterson b. Morebattle:

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/583630/PATERSON,%20J%20Y

The birth record, various census records, even his attestation paper below for the CEF are all clearly Jasper, so it's clutching at straws a bit.

Yes, you are right. It's Jasper, not Jason, my bad memory I'm afraid.Fyfe Paterson his father died in August 1917 and is buried in Eckford churchyard. His son Jasper was killed at Arras in June 1917 aged 35 years. Notice his father died two months later. I'd missed that because his name is listed as Jasper Younger which I thought was his surname. Thankyou all for your help.
