1881 Census on ancestry
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 18:46 BST (UK) »
I'm wondering if it's just me. In fact I'm getting a bit paranoid now  >:(

I found my Great Great Grandfather William Taylor (and his wife and children) on a old fashioned fiche a long time ago now, in the Latter Day Saints library, and today I managed to find them again on family search. The citation link mentions FindMyPast but a search on there doesn't find him. Nor does a search on ancestry despite the fact I have the reference numbers -page, folio piece etc. I even have his occupation, which I already knew from my Grandmother. The printout I have has the shortened form of his name Wm. so I've searched on that too. NOTHING!...
Deciding to add a photo of the printout instead as a source on ancestry I decided to try to fill in a few details on my great great aunt, since I've received some correspondence from a cousin today.
Margaret Drain was born in 1871 in Shap, she appears as a baby on the 1871 census, and on the 1881 census with the rest of the family in Dalbeattie where they all grew up. Now I have a print out of her in 1891 census in Kirkcudbright, as a 20 year old domestic servant. I found it on FindMyPast, but can't find her at all on Ancestry!!
Is it me? Is it Ancestry? Anyone else had similar problems?

Could you tell us where William Taylor living in 1881 and if possible the piece and folio number that you have?   Sometimes entering as little information as possible gets better results on Ancestry.

Hi Carole yes Shap is Cumberland - or rather it used to be West Ward, Westmorland. apparently!

Cathy

Hi Cathy, that's not her, she was definitely in Kirkcudbright, I've been chatting to my cousin, and we've found her together... including her marriage in 1900. Once I had the marriage date, other records started popping up on Ancestry, or perhaps it's just a glitch yesterday - who knows  :)

Could you tell us where William Taylor living in 1881 and if possible the piece and folio number that you have?   Sometimes entering as little information as possible gets better results on Ancestry.

Mo

Hi Mo,

This is what I have for William Taylor, I am strugling with his birth and that of his wife, though I do have her death certificate. I bought her birth certificate but am now convinced it isn't the correct one...

Name:   Wm Taylor
Age (Original):   27
Gender:   Male
Birth Year:   1854
Birthplace:   Manchester, Lancashire, England
Relationship to Head of Household:   Head
Marital Status:   Married
Occupation:   Glass Blower
Address:   329a Oldham Rd
Event Place:   Newton, Lancashire, England
Record Type:   Household
Affiliate Publication Number:   RG11
Piece/Folio:   4009 / 87
Page Number:   30

Other household members are:
Sarah Ann Taylor   Wife   F    24   Hulme, Lancashire, England
Emily Taylor   Daughter   F   7   Salford, Lancashire, England
Thos Edward Taylor   Son   M   2   Newton Heath, Lancashire, England
Edward Taylor   Cousin   M   10   Birmingham, Warwickshire, England

Emily is my Great Grandmother (mum's mum's mum) so direct female line. her birth certificate states her mother is Sarah Ann maiden name ROTHBOURNE. I mistakenly bought birth certificate for Sarah Ann Rathbone, but following the census gives a different life path for each.
