Richard PICKERING dob 1817 Rochdale
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 19:40 BST (UK) »
Hi  We recently found a press cutting about the death in police service of Superintendent Richard Pickering in 1868 in Rochdale. He is the great grandfather (?) of my husband. Is there anybody on this website who is possibly related?  The article intimated he had a big family as it mentioned collecting money to help his widow who I believe, from a little research, was called Mary (Poole) and they were married in Ormskirk.

My husband is Simon Richard Pickering born 1947, mother Mary Elizabeth Pickering born 1918 and lived in Chorlton cum Hardy, Manchester.

Hoping to find somebody who is related.

Maggie

Hi Sandra,

Thank you for your interest.  We have traced my husband down from James Pickering - James Arthur Pickering - Mary Elizabeth Pickering (mother).  We tried to go further back to the mother of Richard b. 1817 but could not find Betty (on the census 1861).  Also found a Susan who we thought was mother....  Going on holiday tomorrow so will get sorted once we return.  Probably next stop is Parish Records.

Regards,

Margaret

Hi  Thanks for the information.  We have a press cutting from 1869 in which somebody is asking for a collection to take place for the widow of Richard Pickering, Police Superintendent.

We are still a little confused as to to who is Richard's mother...We have found this:

Richard Pickering christened 1818, born 1817 St Paul Blackburn, Lancashire, son of Susan Pickering

Susan Pickering
mentioned in the record of Richard Pickering
Name:   Susan Pickering
Gender:   Female
Son:   Richard Pickering

Will have to investigate further once we return from holiday.

Regards,

Margaret

The 1851/1861 census seemed to indicate that Richard was born in Liverpool - Possible Christening Record

Richard Pickering - Christening Date 16 July 1817 - St Peters Liverpool Lancashire.
Parents John Pickering and Elizabeth
