Thank-you all for help so far. I am aware of the information given here and yes I agree that a certificate is the best answer but as I'm doing a favor for a friend, I thought some-one might be able to fill in some blanks.
I will suggest to my friend that he sends for a certificate.
Sandie.

When and where did Charles Hill die? You said 1940 in the original post - are you sure that is correct?

I saw that Rosie, but Sandie gave no indication whether that was correct. Sandie said Charles was born abt 1883, but that death suggests slightly later - abt 1884. Charles Hill is a common name so small discrepencies are important.

If Charles was born in 1883, that death from Rosie would fit.

In addition, as Charles was stated as born about 1883, then that death definitely fits.

Perhaps the friend has not told Sandie the exact year?

Of course the death "fits", but it is not consistent with what we were told in the first post.

Good morning, thank-you for ongoing information. The information that I was given is from one of Charles sons. He said that his father died in 1940 at the age of 57 so I counted back to 1883 for a probable birth.
He apparently had worked as a painter and he had two sons. Four step-children also.
His parents at one time had lived in a terrace house in Woolwich.
This is the only information that the son was able to give me.

Hi Sandie,

Thanks for clearing that up. Apart from getting the marriage certificate, the only cost-effective way I can think you might be able to proceed with this is to wait until the 1939 Register is made available online (hopefully sometimes this year). It should give his exact date of birth.
