Trying to trace my ancestor Cornelius Harley ( Hurley ) circa 1835
« on: Sunday 17 May 15 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to trace my great-great-great grandfather, Cornelius Harley ( Hurley ) born circa 1833.
I think his wife's name was Catherine and they had at least one child, Annie Harley ( aka Honora Ann Hurley ).
Can anyone help me, please ? I know Annie was born in London, so I presume they were living there, but think they originally came from Ireland.
Thank you.
Marilyn. :)

On the 1881 census, there's a Cornelius Harley, b. 1833, Greenwich, Kent.  Says he's married. He's a second engineer aboard the vessel Capulet, anchored off Southend.

What did "your" Cornelius do for a living?

There is a Cornelius Harley, b. Ireland, but his yob is give as 1831, so how sure are you of his age?

Hi SmallTownGirl ( love the name  8)

He was a tailor, and I think I might have found him on another genealogical web-site.
Not sure of his birth, however his daughter married at 28 and his name is on the marriage certificate, so I presume his birth date was circa 1830-something.

Where did you find the one born in 1831? Also, most importantly, does it say he was born in Ireland and where in Ireland, because that's what I'm really trying to discover?

Thanks for your kind help !
Marilyn. :D

In 1861, there's a Cornelius Harley b 1831 Ireland, living with his widowed mother, Catherine, 68, b. Ireland, in Shadwell, Stepney, but he's a "labourer in stone yard".

Will see if I can find any others ....

I've found a tailor!

1861, St James, Westminster.
Cornelius Harley, 30, tailor, b. Ireland
Mary Ann Harley, 26, wife, b. Ireland
James Harley, 7, son, b. St James Westminster
Richard Harley, 4, son, b. St James Westminster
Mary Ann Harley, 7 wks (I think), dau, b. St James Westminster

Is that a better fit for you?

That's the one I found, too !
They also have another daughter, Honora, who I think was my  Grt-GrT grandmother.

We have a record of a Catherine Hurley, buried in Kensal Green cemetery in a  public grave, I believe. I thought she might have been his wife, but perhaps it was his mother after all.
Unfortunately I can't access the info on my computer now, as we have a power failure ( joys of living in South Africa ) but can look later this afternoon to see if the dates tie up.

Does your I fo say where in Ireland Cornelius lived ?
Thank you 👍😎🍀

Yes, it's her father Cornelius Harlley (Hurley) that I'm trying to trace. I got Honora's marriage certificate yesterday and it states her father's name was Cornelius, and that he was a tailor.
The problem is they are sometimes called Hurley on some documents and on others they are Harley.

The most important thing that I'm trying to discover, is where in Iteland my family come from, as we are going there on holiday in three weeks time.
