Diederik Johannes Durand
« on: Monday 18 May 15 01:33 BST (UK) »
Greetings. I am hoping to find out more about my ancestor Diederik Johannes Durand. He was in the Cape Mounted Police. Born 8/5/1819 Craddock. I am particularly interested in his service record/s and/or any service medal/s.

I think he lost his wife Johanna Maria Erasmus and child during the Seige of Mafekeng.

many thanks

He appears on here, all three entries are him I think.

http://angloboerwar.com/name-search

Durand   D J      Private   CGHGSM (1) Bechuanaland. CPD2. Special Police
Source: Roll of the  CGHGSM   Cape Police

Durand   D J         District 2
Source: QSA and KSA rolls    Cape Police

Durand   Diederick   505      Attested: Nov 1897. Source: CMP 11   Cape Police

You can see he recieved medals as he is on the medal roll.
On this site it says you can get the records for 5 pounds but I myself have never used it.

What a shame he lost his wife and child :(

Wow! Thank you so much. Will keep searching also. I am very new to all of this.
The loss of his first wife and child was devastating to him. But in marrying again he came to be my grandfather.

Thank you for your speedy reply

Kind regards

Thank you so much Garstonite....I don't think I recognize anyone...but I do realise that I have misunderstood some notes I had...my grandfather was (I now think) born in 1878. 23rd Sep. That makes him around 21 during the Mafekeng seige. Which is more believable than my first date of birth.

Now not trusting my notes...I now only think he was born in Craddock. Molteno is in a distant memory too now. Oh Dear! I obviously never asked the right questions of dear family when they were alive.

Regards

Hello again

Thank you so much for the trouble you are taking

I am not so sure that can be him...I keep striking this lady too and she is not my grandmother...Maria Magdelena Oberholster was my grandmother. Family tales have it she was friend of his first wife (promised to take care of Diederik as first wife was dying) - born 14/8/1885 died 8/3/65.

Kind regards
