Medcalf Family from Derby
« on: Wednesday 20 May 15 09:55 BST (UK) »
I am new to this forum & would like some help in tracing my ancestors from that area. My father had 3 sisters & 1 brother they were Ellen, Hazel & Sheila & his brother John all have since passed away & I have lost touch with my cousins.
My grandfather was Harold William Medcalf born 1901 died 1987, my grandmother's maiden name is Deakin.
My grandfather lived in Langley mill has a miner & the family moved to Derby.
Any information would be much appreciated

Looks like this might be your grandfather's marriage: -

1923 St Lawrence, Heanor Harold William Medcalf to Hannah Elizabeth Ratcliffe Deakin

Do you have your grandfather's wedding certificate - should give his father's name. You could then try & find him on the 1901 census.

We are not allowed to provide lookups on the 1911 census but you could see if Harold is on it: -

www.1911census.co.uk - free to search although you have to pay for details.

Hi,

Using  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl  there is only 1 birth registration for a
Harold William Medcalf, abt 1901.

Harold William Medcalf  March Q 1901  Newport P  3a 897.

Looking at his death registration 1987 Derby, his date of birth is given as 29th November
1901.  So strictly speaking his birth should have been registered December Q 1901 but
no registration appears.  There is however:

March Q 1902 Basford 7b 168
Medcalf Harold William

If the above date of birth is correct he will have missed 1901  Census and will only be in 1911 Census.

As suggested, would purchase his marriage registration certificate, to be certain of his Father's name and occupation.

Hello - I think your family lived at Bailey Grove -which is kind of part langley Mill and part Eastwood - growing up around that area I would have said it was in Eastwood Notts
Langley Mill is one of those odd places which is part in one county and part in another
The postal address was always given as Notts -while most of Langley Mill is in Derbyshire!!

Will see what information I can find

Suz
Thornhill, Cresswell, Sisson, Harriman, Cripps, Eyre, Walter, Marson, Battison, Holmes, Bailey, Hardman, Fairhurst Noon-mainly in Derbys/Notts-but also Northampton, Oxford, Leics, Lancs-England

I have found birth reg for the siblings (and marriage and death for some of them ) -it looks like they all have middle names- cannot find Hazel??

Could you post when and where they died??

My father's brother John Barry died in Derby 1935 -2011 found an obituary for him in the derby telegraph.
I believe Ellen L. died derby but unsure 1928 -2007.
Sheila moved to Nottingham born 1933.
Hazel could possibly still alive don't have a birth date
My cousins name are Rachael, Theresa, Stephanie, Lorraine & Hazel all born to my Aunties so obviously not Medcalf's.
Regards
Peter

There's a birth in 1936 to Medcalf/Deakin parents with H as a middle initial.  Won't post the name, because they might still be alive.
Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)
