Twigg - Linney
« on: Wednesday 20 May 15 13:44 BST (UK) »
Could you help me with this puzzle?
Reuben Twigg married Mary Buxton and at the wedding, his father's name is recorded as George Lilley, I think this is a misprint for Linney (Free-Reg).  Reuben was 28 years old when he got married on 29 Mar 1902. (so birth 1874).  He was born in Brampton according to 1911 census.

No evidence has been found to support Reuben being illegitimate.  No birth registration has been found for a Reuben Twigg which is within 10 years of 1874.  In the third quarter of 1868 and in the final quarter of 1872; two births were registered in the name of Reuben Linney, both in Chesterfield.

George Linney married Sarah Ann Parramore or Sarah Coates in the 3rd qtr of 1869 in Chesterfield.  George Linney married Sarah Ann Twigg and Joseph Lovelee married Charlotte Linney, in the 4th quarter of 1876 in Sheffield, Yorkshire; these two marriages are on the same page.

In the 1881 census Reuben Linney is the youngest child of George and Sarah Linney along with 3 Twiggs who say they are in-laws but could be step children.
In the 1891 census Reuben Linney (19) is single and living with his mother Sarah Linney (38) a widow; along with his mother's other son Arthur Twigg and Arthur's family.

Three marriages have been found for Reuben Twigg,  the first in 1889 when Ruben Twigg marries Charlotte Moore in 1889 in Newbold, giving his father's name as George Linney.  No death record has been found for Charlotte Twigg.  Next, he marries Mary Buxton in 1897 in St Thomas' Church, but father's names are not recorded (England Marriages, 1538–1973).  This is just after the birth of the first of her 3 illegitimate children.  Mary Buxton has two more illegitimate children then in 1902 Reuben marries Mary again at St Thomas' Church and takes in the two surviving children she has.
Questions
If his father was George Linney, could Reuben legally just change his name to Twigg?
Why is there no death registration for his first wife, Charlotte?
Why was the first marriage to Mary Buxton recorded, but seemed to be annulled?

Thanks John Buxton

You can call yourself whatever you like, as long as there is no intention to defraud.

It seems strange why Reuben chose to use the name Twigg rather than Linney. But as his Mum didn't seem to marry Linney till he was about 4, and as he had older Twigg siblings, then maybe he had just got used to being known as Reuben Twigg and continued with that.

As for the death of Charlotte, there could be all manner of reasons. First and most likely is that it has been misindexed, making it hard to find (maybe Trigg, or something). Secondly and less likely maybe she died abroad or in Scotland, and of course there is always the possibility she didn't die and subsequent marriages were bigamous!

Hi,

Re 1881 Census for the Linney Family:-

George Linney   68                   Head
Sarah Linney   49                   Wife
Tom Linney   22                   Son  -  assume this is the son of George Linney and 1st Wife
then we have the children of Sarah
Ben Twigg   27
Tom Twigg   20
Elizabeth Twigg   22         Listed as son or dau IN LAW  meaning step children.  Not as we
                                             understand "In Law" today.
Charlotte Linney   15         Listed  as Daughter?
Arthur Linney   13                                 Son
Reuben Linney   8                                   Son          So the children of George/Sarah Linney

Reuben Linney birth registered  Dec Q 1972 Chesterfield  7b 589.  Brampton is within the
Chesterfield Registration District. (this registration to comply with age on census)

Charlotte Twigg birth registered  Sept Q 1866 Chesterfield  7b 490

Possible registration
Arthur Insley  birth registered  March Q 1867 Chesterfield 7b 515

Have you purchased birth registration certificate for Reuben?

My G. grandparents had 11 children, prior to them being married all registered in Surname
of Father.  Then whilst pregnant with their 12th child, a new vicar arrived, and obviously asked
some questions they were told he would not christen the 12th child they traveled some miles away for the marriage, 12th child born week later.

There are a couple of mentions for Reuben in the papers for minor misdemeanors.
17th Sep 1898
" Reuben Twigg alias Linney" and one of his partners in crime a Joseph Moore who is possibly living with the family in 1901.

It may be worth purchasing the Charlotte Moore marriage cert 1889 - as it seems Arthur Twigg (Reuben's brother)was married to a Charlotte -maybe the names have been mistranscribed??

Thanks Suz - Arthur Twigg & Charlotte are living as husband & wife in the 1901 census.  The 1871 census has Charlotte More (3) born in Heeley, Yorks with father John More, mother and siblings including Joshua.  This ties up with the 1901 census and Joshua is boarding with them. So now the puzzle is how did Reuben's name get mixed up with Arthur's?  The age of the eldest child points to the 1889 marriage where her father is recorded as John Moore.
Thanks Cath - that seems to prove he used both names.
Thanks Spendlove - I hadn't realized daughter in law could mean step daughter, I assume it also had the modern day meaning but there are some relationships I now need to re-check.  Great anecdote.
Thanks again

Does anyone have any theories as to why the 1897 marriage of Reuben Twigg to Mary Buxton was recorded, but seemed to be annulled?  In the 1901 census both are single.

Was that suggested marriage in 1896, an actual marriage or just banns, as does not show elsewhere?

Thanks, I remember finding two marriages before and one turning out to be the banns being read in the groom's parish. This must be the case here.
