Sarah Ann DILLEY, Cottered or Hitchinfield, Hertfordshire
« on: Friday 22 May 15 12:35 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with Sarah Ann DILLEY please?

Her age at the various times I have found her would indicate that she was born between 1852 and 1856, and I was told that she was born in Cottered, Hertfordshire, it appears to be where she was brought up and where she stated she was born in later census, so why did her grandparents record her place of birth as Hitchinfield, Herts and where is it? I also wonder whether the 30 year old single woman and unmarried daughter of John and Mary, Sarah DILLEY born Cottered is the mother of all three of the grandchildren recorded on this census.

Sarah Ann DILLEY was my great-great grandmother.  In 1861 she was living (Sarah A aged 6 born Hitchinfield, Herts) with her grandparents John (aged 46) and Mary (nee GRAY) (aged 43) DILLEY in Cottered village.  On the same census entry were two other grand daughters Betsy DILLEY aged 10 born Buntingford. Herts (almost certainly later Elizabeth LOVELL) and Louisa DILLEY aged 2 born Cottered, Herts.  Louisa was baptised the daughter of Sarah DILLEY, singlewoman on 21st November 1858 also on the same day Rebecca, Eliza and James the last three children born to John and Mary DILLEY born 1854, 1847, and 1850 respectively.

Sarah Ann DILLAY married William James WARBY (note spelling variations) at Bennington, Herts on 31st October 1874, she claimed to be 21 and her father's name was recorded as _____ DILLAY, which probably means that she was illegitimate.

There is only one entry on FREE BMD that seems to match, but it is Hitchin in the June quarter of 1852, which feels too early for the 6 year old child on the census and Cottered is in the Royston district.  No baptism has been found for Sarah Ann DILLEY in Cottered.

I have lots of theories but Hitchinfield appears to be the key.

hi,
No reason to believe this is your Sarah given Sussex is nowhere near Herts but there is a Sarah Ann Dilley registered Horsham district Sussex ( which includes Itchingfield) 2b 209 -Sept 1855
Familysearch has the Christening
Sarah Anne Dilley chr 2nd September 1855 Itchingfield mother Sarah.
Can t find an obvious candidate still living in Sussex in 1861.

I know the 1861 says Hitchinfield but is there a possibility it could have been misheard/transcribed?  There is an Itchingfield in Sussex which comes under Horsham and this birth on freebmd

Births September qtr 1855
Sarah Ann   Dilley   Horsham    2b   209

No 1861 entry matching a Sussex birth and no death between 1855-1861

Thank you!

That sounds quite hopeful.  The Hertford Record Office has a book with all the local old names, roads that no longer exist etc and Hitchinfield was not in it.  Also Cottered became Cotterage in a later census taken in Bedford, so anything is possible.  I will investigate.  Both Betsy (Elizabeth) and Louisa are I am sure the daughters of Sarah but I could not find my Sarah Ann.

Thank you, this is definitely another possibility and I will be checking it out.  I had found this one myself but it seems too early for the 1861 census information that I have and most of the later ages on various documents suggest 1854-5 as a year of birth, and the 1861 census entry seems otherwise very accurate.

Hi

(Amended)

HALS "Online Names" search is worth "playing" with especially with the various "Dilley" spellings.

https://www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?formid=HALS_INDEXES

There is a "Sarah Dilley" marriage .

Hi,

Have you considered this birth?

Female DILLY    Jun Q 1855    Royston    3a  196

This birth has been entered on the index twice maybe an error or possibly twins :-\

I can't find an infant death to match so maybe she was named later :-\

Regards,
Daisy
