1861 census
« on: Monday 25 May 15 10:55 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my Gt Gt Grandfather, Henry Scriven, who was living at 46 Huntingdon Street, Kingsland Road, Shoreditch in 1860 - 1864, but cannot find him on the Census. He is down on my Gt Gt Aunts Birth Certificate as Hairdresser, General Dealer. Is their anyone who has any ideas how to find him?

Thanks

Christine

Have you found the street you think he was living on in 1861 and "walked" along it on the census? Street numbers can be incorrectly labelled, but if the whole street is missing it may be that that area is missing (parts of this census are)

Hi

Yes I have looked at the whole of the Street and found that part of it is missing, any ideas where I can go from here?  I can find him on the 1841 census and the 1871 census but not in between.

Thanks

Christine

Unfortunately if that part is missing from the census, I think that is a dead end as far as the 1861 is concerned. If he was a hairdresser you might be able to trace him through street directories, although that will probably just give where he worked.

Hi Christine,

Hope my message isn't to late.  It seems Henry Scriven was related to us both, and I have quite a bit of information regarding him and his family.  He would of been my 3rd great grandfather and I was a hairdresser / musical instrument dealer who lived for many years in Fieldgate Street, Shoreditch.

I would be very interested to know how you know the information about him living at Huntingdon Street as I only have information from 1871 onwards.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve

The first I can find of Henry is on the 1841 Census, he was an Apprenticed Hairdresser to a George Gunning.  No trace of him on the 1851 Census and the 1861 Census for part of Huntingdon Street is missing.  I have Birth Certificates for most of his Children and at least 3 were born on Huntingdon Street.

If you want to give me a call to pass on more information you can get me on (*)

Regards

Christine
