Would certificates show more information than Parish records
« on: Monday 25 May 15 14:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have found a parish record for the marriage of my ancestors.

It gives the names of witnesses and the brides father aswell as other useful info. For the groom's father it just says "deceased" and no name is mentioned.  It doesn't say how old they were which would be useful..

The marriage was in 1854, would getting the certificate definitely give the name of the father or could it just be a waste of money.

After July 1837 the information in the parish register is the same as on the marriage certificate.

When you get married in church there are three register books. One for the Church Records, and one subsequently sent to the Registry Office, these are signed by the couple and the witnesses, the third one is filled in by the vicar as the certified copy and given to the couple, they all have the same details.

Just one more thing..
Am I right in thinking a parish record for a death or burial would differ from a certificate..

Yes they are different. The parish record is just for a burial, the actual death is registered with the Registrar who issues a death certificate.
