Thomas Younger

I'm trying to find Thomas Younger who is on the WW1 war memorial at Eckford Church in the Scottish Borders. According to a scroll which used to hang in the church he was in the Seaforth Highlanders but I cannot find him on CWGC, Forces War Records or Every Man Remembered. Please could anybody suggest where I could try next?

Hi Morageckford,

The only Thomas Younger in a Highland Regiment dying in WW1 that I can find is this chap who was in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's): http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/245015/YOUNGER,%20T

There is on the other hand a couple of other's called Thomas Young who were in the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs): http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1556593/YOUNG,%20THOMAS & http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/876190/YOUNG,%20THOMAS

Also a Thomas C Young also of the Seaforth Highlanders: http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/275016/YOUNG,%20T%20C

If it is not any of the above then what details regarding Thomas Younger appear on the scroll?

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

I didn't find any of these! All the scroll says is that he was in the Seaforth Highlanders. The war memorial gives his home as Bowmont Forest, which is near Kelso, Roxburghshire. Looks as if he was a forester, or his father was. I'll put the most likely one, Lance cpl 8634 into Forces War Records and see if he's there. Thankyou for looking.

Reply to DavidJP: I have contacted the Heritage Hub in Hawick, Scotttish Borders, and they know of a Thomas Younger who was born in Cheswick, Northumberland and lived at Beal. He must be a WW1 casualty as I told them why I was looking for him. I'm going to go over to Hawick and see what they've got on Thomas Younger. I'll let you know if I find the man I'm looking for!

David JP: I've been to Hawick and found all the details of Thomas Younger. He was 40 when he died on 28th May 1918 of TB, having become ill in France and sent home on a hospital ship. His grave is old, not a military grave, at Kyloe in Northumberland. He was a private in the 9th (Service) Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders, no S/ 4649 but he doesn't appear on any websites I looked on. No wonder I couldn't find him! His only connection to Eckford was that his grandfather lived there and he (Thomas) worked here.

Thankyou for helping.
