West Riding - Falstaff Inn in the Borough of Huddersfield
« on: Tuesday 26 May 15 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I am looking for the Falstaff Inn. It is entered as a Beerhouse in the Register of Licenses for the Borough of Huddersfield. It was owned by a Mr Bentley of Leeds but the license was transferred to Harry Winterbottom in 1896. The original licensee was Joseph Foster of Cross Grove Street.

Thank you

Even the car park has now been replaced by a new leisure centre.
The Kirklees Image archive has some pictures of of Cross Grove St, you can search it here http://www.kirkleesimages.org.uk/frontend.php

Hello Stu

Thank you. The link to the Kirklees Image Archive was really helpful as it locates Cross Grove Street in Springwood, Huddersfield and details are good. From the pictures on the archive, the area looks a little grim. But Harry did move to Newton Heath when he left Huddersfield - very grim.

Warm Regards

Local historian David Green has written extensively about the Pubs in Huddersfield, and has published at least one book.  It might be worth your while to telephone the Huddersfield Local Studies library and ask them to do a free 30 minute search.  I feel sure they will have a copy of his book, so would be able to read out/email you the text and image.
Kind regards
